Ignorance, hatred, pride, great desire and jealousy, are the vows without protection, this is the vajra of samaya. Thus it is said. In its commentary, the second Buddha, Padmasambhava, said: Ignorance is the samaya of Vairochana, why? Because ignorance cannot be abandoned, wisdom cannot be cultivated, because it is of one taste in the realm of dharma. Thus it is said. Although it is so, the great fools of the present time speculate wildly about the nature of secret mantra. Without faith and devotion and bodhicitta, devoid of skillful means and wisdom and samadhi, therefore they have no liberation. Those who enter into mantras that seem like reasoning and hold that cause and effect are all liberated are completely under the control of discrimination and only place their own minds in samaya with clinging minds, so very few travel on the true path. Why? For example, there are those who want to take the path of not losing their own nature when intense hatred arises in their minds. In that case, even the son who kills his father, who has mindfulness and self-control, will not be stained by karma, so the so-called liberation is only a term. Some want to take it as a path by judging with reason. In that case, there is no difference from the vehicle of logic, so it is similar to considering the benefit of sentient beings who have roots of virtue and corresponding afflictions that are the objects of abandonment of the path of meditation. Some meditate on love as an antidote to hatred and make it both abandonment and antidote. In that case, the antidote is the path, not the affliction. Some want to take as the path the consciousness that arises after the cessation of hatred, as if it were exhausted. In that case, affliction and wisdom are different. Therefore, their nature is that at the time of affliction, they have any part of abandonment and antidote, so the path continuum that is not established by its own nature is cut off, and after the cut, it is connected by the connection of sharp examination, so it is only the result of cessation and the true antidote path truth. If so, then how should it be? In the nature of knowable things, the self-continuum of affliction is not established, so when desire and so on arise, they arise from the dharmata of emptiness, so they do not abide in self-nature. The connection that is judged by reason is also not established.

It is merely pacifying the elaborations of the antidote to be abandoned. If the individual self-natures are not obstructed, and if one knows their very nature as the dharmata, then since the very essence of taking up afflictions is pure, it cannot perform the act of accumulating karma, and it does not accumulate the habitual tendencies that depend on it, so there is no need to abandon it. As the Vajra says: "The afflictions are like illusions, empty in essence. By knowing their impermanent nature, one is liberated." And as the Sutra of the Wheel of Non-Returning says: "Ignorance is like the sky; all phenomena are without characteristics. There is no desire and no hatred; pride and jealousy, all are like illusions, without essence; not perceived as existent or nonexistent, free from support." Even if one does not fully realize that, one does not abandon them by seizing them with skillful means. Just as alchemy can turn copper into gold, so too, by relying on the special pith instructions of skillful means that are expert in the aspect of objects, one purifies one's own self-nature into the five wisdoms. As the Ocean says: "The path of afflictions is great purity; the desired objects of skillful means are the best of ornaments. By enjoying all and everything, one quickly transforms into the glorious Heruka." And as the Compendium of Vehicles says: "For those who possess great skillful means, afflictions transform into limbs of enlightenment." One does not abandon them by knowing them as body and wisdom: In the path of mantra, since each and every moment of the continuum of mind is spontaneously accomplished as body and wisdom, one does not abandon them because one realizes them as the nature of the five families from the very moment they appear as the five afflictions. As the Twenty-Eight Samayas say: "The five afflictions, such as jealousy, are inherently the nature of the five families." In short, the Shravakas abandon them, the Pratyekabuddhas obstruct them, the Bodhisattvas purify them in conjunction with the roots of virtue, and the outer mantra practitioners transform them. In this stage of the unsurpassable vehicle, by combining the view of great equality and expertise in the means of samadhi, whatever is the nature of afflictions is sealed with the dharmata of its own emptiness, so it does not remain in its own aspect but is transformed into the path. As it says: "Unobstructed appearance is skillful means; absence of self-nature is wisdom." And as the General Sutra says: "The self-nature of afflictions appearing like poison appears as the essence of the five wisdoms of liberation."
