The four emptinesses, or the respective results produced by the four joys of those who are attached to desire, are solely to be placed equally in luminosity or coemergence. That is, having entered the yoga of sleeping, before falling asleep, by focusing one-pointedly on the seed-syllable Hūṃ (Tibetan: ཧཱུྃ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: हुं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: Hūṃ) at the heart, the wind-mind gathers slightly, and the signs of the elements dissolving in sequence arise, and subtle signs of appearances such as smoke and mirages appear. Then, as one approaches falling asleep, the wind gathers greatly, and consciousness dissolves into appearance. The cessation of coarse thoughts is called emptiness, like the rising of moonlight in the clear autumn sky. Then, as one falls slightly asleep, the wind gathers even more greatly, and all subtle thoughts cease. Appearance dissolving into increase is called very emptiness, like the clear sky being struck by sunlight. Then, as one falls deeply asleep, all the winds gather, and increase dissolves into near attainment, and most subtle thoughts cease, which is called great emptiness. It appears like the clear sky being covered by the darkness of twilight. Then, all the winds dissolve, and one falls completely asleep. In the moment when all coarse and subtle thoughts cease, the merit channel of the central channel turns upwards, and the wind-mind gathers, and everything is empty, or it is called near attainment dissolving into luminosity, like the sky at dawn in autumn, free from the three conditions of awakening, becoming clear. Thus, having recognized each of the four emptinesses directly with strong desire, in the end, not losing the nature of luminosity, which is the nature of emptiness of all, that is the essence of the instruction. Even so, for those who are not of the highest faculties and fortune, or who are not meditators who have relied on solitude for a long time, but are ordinary people who are controlled by discursive thoughts, perhaps only the state of the first and second emptinesses can be attained, or through the power of practice, the latter two can be recognized. However, in that very moment, the nature of the ālaya is obscured by the indeterminate, and the suchness of luminosity is obscured, causing a loss of memory. From that state, the ālaya-consciousness arouses mind-consciousness, producing the manner of dreaming. From the Definitive Meaning Gathered Tantra: From the indeterminate ālaya, the previous scattering is mind, the later arising is afflicted mind, the arising of the five gates is thought. Thus it is.

When waking up, immediately pray to the Lama intensely. Reduce sleep time slightly. Visualize in the center of the body, a Dharmadhatu (dhātu) Duti (dhūti) like a clear crystal pillar, without any obscuration inside or out, completely transparent, and in the center of the heart, a red "Ah" (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: Ah) syllable, as bright as a burning butter lamp, so that the entire inside of the body is like moonlight entering through a window. Focus on this state and maintain a natural posture. That is to say, when just waking up and when turning over, maintain an alert state of awareness. In the lineage of the Vast Expanse of Space: If sleep is clarified as meditation, then at the times of turning over and waking up, if one remembers the Dharmakaya of Tilopa (Tibetan: ཏི་ལ, Sanskrit Devanagari: तिल, Sanskrit Romanization: tila, Chinese literal meaning: Sesame), it is like being placed in a precious gau box. Like this, through diligent practice, even if it is not a state of unconsciousness in deep sleep, nor a state of dreaming, but in the interval between these two states, if occasionally a clear and bright awareness like a cloudless sky arises, then that is the beginning of realizing luminosity. Generally, luminosity is distinguished from the perspective of the three aspects of ground, path, and fruition. First, in the desire realm, there are the coarse seven aggregates of consciousness; in the form realm, there is the subtle alaya consciousness; and in the formless realm, there is the extremely subtle alaya-only consciousness. Because these consciousnesses are dominant, luminosity is obscured, and one does not recognize oneself, thus forming samsara. Therefore, the luminosity of abiding, the luminosity of sleep, and the luminosity of death are all universally present whether one practices or not, so it is called the ground luminosity. Second, through the power of practicing on the path, the grasping of the aggregates of consciousness becomes clear, thereby realizing that all phenomena are unborn, this is the general meaning luminosity. In the three states of deep sleep, fainting, and death, the wind-mind merges and dissolves into the central channel, thereby experiencing the four emptinesses. This is the luminosity awakened by the wisdom of hidden meaning or vipashyana, exemplified by a clear sky, the dualistic appearances like illusions become increasingly subtle, and ultimately one realizes the wisdom of extreme non-discrimination. These are the luminosities of the path period, which are the places where practice will not be mistaken. From then on, the state of no-more-learning union manifests, which is merely represented by the fruition luminosity. In reality, luminosity is the truth of the noble ones.
