Its basis is the fourth dhyana. Entering into seeing the suchness that is truly separated from all elaborations with transcendental wisdom is called obtaining the path of seeing, which means obtaining the Dharma eye that is free from dust and defilements. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Sagacious Intelligence: "The sons of gods who act in the desire and form realms, ninety-six factions of workers, are completely purified with the Dharma eye free from dust and defilements in all dharmas." At that time, emptiness and compassion are united without any separation between them. Although the truth of suchness is directly seen on the first ground, it is not seen as it is in its own nature like the eighth ground, which is extremely pure, because it still possesses the obscurations of abandonment by seeing on its own ground and the abandonment by meditation of the noble ones. If we speak in terms of its nature, there are three aspects: cause, result, and essence. The first is the path of accumulation and the path of joining of the Great Vehicle. The second is the path of meditation and the path of no more learning. The third has four aspects: definition, basis, classification, and characteristics. The first is that the Dharma-patience and Dharma-wisdom, and subsequent-patience and subsequent-wisdom of the Great Vehicle, together with the four sets and four cycles, can be designated as the path of seeing of the Great Vehicle. It arises after the completion of the path of joining of the Great Vehicle, and whatever virtue is included by it becomes the cause for the first moment of the transcendental path of meditation of the Great Vehicle to arise in one's own continuum. The second is that for each of the four noble truths, there are four: Dharma-wisdom-patience, Dharma-wisdom, subsequent-wisdom-patience, and subsequent-wisdom, totaling eight sets and two cycles. As the Ornament says: "For truths such as suffering, Dharma-wisdom and subsequent-wisdom, patience and wisdom are sixteen moments." In terms of the ground, when transcendental wisdom is first manifested, at that time, one obtains the great joy of being close to enlightenment and seeing the accomplishment of the benefit of others, which has never been experienced before, so it is the Extremely Joyful Ground. As quoted from that very text, being close to enlightenment, etc., as quoted in the sixth chapter. The third is that for each of the four sequences of suffering, origin, cessation, and path, there are sixteen moments such as Dharma-patience.
