It is the cause of ignorance, which the wise should abandon. Therefore, one must first rely on the merits of listening. Here, in the realm of ordinary beings, without relying on the wisdom that arises from listening, the merits of contemplation and meditation will wander in inappropriate places. The wisdom of listening is said to be the root of all things. If someone's continuum is that of a noble being, then due to the strength of past habits being firm, even if they do not engage in extensive listening and contemplation in this life, they may have intelligence from their own strength. Even if that is the case, as long as the four individual correct knowledges and the merits of the ninth ground endowed with them have not arisen in their continuum, they must strive. Just as the youth Norzang (Norbzang) prayed: 'May all virtues be without measure!' Therefore, as a sign that one's own continuum is that of an ordinary being, if the mind is full of afflictions and is similar to other ignorant beings, then praying for their blessings will not be helpful, so one should first seek the wisdom that arises from listening. If one does not do so, then the wisdom of contemplation and meditation will be like a bump under the snow, wandering in inappropriate places. As the teacher Hero said: 'The blind person with little listening does not know how to meditate. Without that, what can one contemplate? Therefore, one should strive to listen, because that is the root cause. By contemplating and then meditating, vast wisdom will arise.' Therefore, the root cause of the arising of wisdom is listening, and the way to go to the forest after listening. Lord Maitreya said: 'Wisdom is supreme, its basis is listening, therefore listening is supreme.' In the Compendium of Trainings, it says: 'One should seek listening that can be endured, then dwell in the forest, and strive to meditate.' So, how does listening determine? The Dharma to be determined is the precious teaching of the Buddha. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'The teacher's sacred Dharma is of two kinds, namely scripture and realization.' Therefore, the teaching is divided into two kinds: scriptural teaching and the teaching of realization. The former is to understand the meaning of the twelve branches of scripture, etc., and the latter is to apply it to one's own continuum after understanding it, and to manifest its realization in one's continuum. Then, the realization of the teaching without error is the teaching of scripture.

Because it depends on understanding. Although this is the case, those with little wisdom should not be discouraged by this. If one does not strive to learn the teachings that are appropriate to one's own wisdom, there will be confusion between the Dharma and the practitioners. Therefore, one should become accustomed to thoroughly studying and contemplating the place where one is to practice, and ultimately learn to increase the power of wisdom. Why? Because even if the place where one is to practice is small in scope, if one thoroughly studies and contemplates it, one can experience its meaning without confusion. In this way, if it becomes the path, then the wisdom that arises from meditation will be proven by valid cognition. Therefore, as a sign that meditation is not mistaken, one needs to increase the wisdom of discernment as much as one meditates, because the nature of wisdom that focuses on suchness and the extent of suchness is the wisdom of insight. Furthermore, the classification of wisdom is twofold: the realization of conventional truth and the realization of ultimate truth. The first, as stated in the Ornament for the Sutras: "If one does not strive in the five fields of knowledge, then even the noble ones will not become omniscient. Therefore, in order to subdue others, to take care of others, and to know everything oneself, one should strive for this." As it says, in order to subdue those who do not believe in the Dharma, one should study grammar and the reasoning of logic; in order to take care of those who have faith, one should study crafts and medicine; in order to know everything oneself, one should seek inner knowledge, which is the special need of this time. If all of these are sought with the intention of generating bodhicitta in order to attain Buddhahood, then there is no difference. Here, it is taught to measure the selflessness of suchness from the perspective of the general meaning, and to measure it from the perspective of direct perception. In order to place the key of wisdom that measures, and in order to place the treasure of the holy Dharma that is measured, therefore, the two truths are distinguished: with the wisdom that measures, measure the Dharma that is measured, measuring it as the two truths and the four hidden meanings. The nature of all dharmas is suchness, abiding in the three doors of liberation, which is the ultimate truth. In order for the phenomena to enter the path of appearance, after measuring with reason, eliminating superimposition is the right path. Knowing which of the two to rely on and not rely on is the wisdom of observing the scriptures.
