Sound is merely posited as a word that abandons both extremes. As stated in the sutra: 'Truth and falsehood are also extremes; existence and non-existence are also extremes. Therefore, having abandoned both extremes, the wise do not even dwell in the middle.' Therefore, the Middle Way in terms of meaning is solely the manner of uniting the two truths. Among those who abide in the two, Svatantrika and Prasangika, the former, the Svatantrika, is: 'How all appearances are established as conventional truth, with the characteristic of being like an illusion; ultimate truth is not established, like the sky. This is the system of the Madhyamika Svatantrika.' As it is said in the 'Destruction of Illusion': 'Conventional truth with an object, in ultimate truth, object and subject are all liberated.' Thus, all aspects of appearance appear as illusory from the perspective of conventional truth, but in ultimate truth, nothing is truly established, like the sky. Moreover, from the perspective of the basis of designation, all phenomena are established as conventional and ultimate depending on the mind, and even though truth is not established in their nature, they are considered to be established as their own characteristics from the perspective of terminology, hence they are called Svatantrika. Among these, there are two distinctions: the establishment of not accepting ultimate truth as an object of cognition, and the difference of accepting it. The first is: what appears in conventional truth is also non-existent, appearing clearly like a dream or illusion. In the Svatantrika school, it is merely established as appearing to arise, but in ultimate truth, from the two truths as objects of cognition, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are not established. As stated in the 'Intermediate Mother': 'Subhuti, all phenomena are without intrinsic nature in ultimate truth, therefore nirvana is also unborn and unceasing.' Therefore, the distinction and characteristics of the two truths are merely the establishment of their essence, and thus they are regarded as nominal ultimate truth. In the face of non-nominal ultimate truth, because it transcends the objects of knowledge and expression, it is liberated from the erroneous superimpositions by reasoning such as being separate from one and many, existence and non-existence, and therefore it should be understood in the manner of cutting off elaboration. Moreover, it is well-known that in the Madhyamika treatises, the ultimate truth of no arising and ceasing is established by the reasoning of the four great arguments. In particular, each chapter of the 'Root Wisdom' also establishes the subtle points of emptiness through reasoning.

Not finished. There are differences. For example, the first chapter of the Root Wisdom Treatise explains in detail in ten different ways, and summarizes in two different ways, showing a total of twelve ways. Here, for the time being, reasoning will be done using the four well-known methods: the Diamond Splinters, the refutation of existence and non-existence of arising, the refutation of arising from the four extremes, and the Great Dependent Arising. The first is: refuting the object to be refuted by examining the cause to be refuted. As stated in the Root Wisdom Treatise: "Not from self, not from other, not from both, nor from no cause. Things, wherever they are, never have arising." Therefore, as a phenomenon, even just a thing itself, in ultimate truth, does not arise from self, other, both, or no cause. Whatever arises from these is empty of all arising things. For example, just a general concept has no thing. The second is: refuting by examining the result to be refuted. As it says: "In the meaning of existence or non-existence, conditions are not suitable. If there is nothing, what becomes a condition? If there is something, what does a condition do?" Therefore, as a phenomenon, this dependent arising is also empty of the three—existence, non-existence, and arising—of the result in the ultimate truth. Thus, whatever is empty of the arising of existence and non-existence from the cause, and is empty of all arising things, is like representing the essence even though there is no thing. The third is: refuting by examining both cause and result. As stated in Entering the Two Truths: "Many do not make one thing, many do not make many, one does not make many things, one does not make one either." Therefore, in this way, appearance is also empty of the four extremes of arising—one arising from one, one arising from many, many arising from many, and many arising from one—in ultimate truth. For example, calling emptiness the sky for something that has no thing. The fourth has two parts: refuting by analyzing the nature of the Great Dependent Arising itself, using non-affirmation as the reason; and being free from one and many, using non-existence as the reason. The first is: whatever arises from conditions is unborn. There is no nature of arising in it. Therefore, dependent arising is also free from the eight extremes such as arising and ceasing, and therefore empty of true nature, appearing like a mirage moving.
