In the Sutra of Great Transcendence, Manjushri, the youth, asked: "Venerable One, what is meant by conventional truth and ultimate truth? Does ultimate truth contain conventional truth? Does conventional truth contain ultimate truth? If they exist, then they become one truth. If they do not exist, then wouldn't the Tathagata's words become false?" The Buddha replied: "Son of noble family, conventional truth itself is ultimate truth." The Venerable One, if that is the case, then there are two truths. The Buddha replied: "Son of noble family, skillful means have spoken of two truths for the sake of sentient beings. Son of noble family, in terms of speech, there are two aspects: worldly dharma and transcendental dharma. Son of noble family, the knowledge of a transcendental being is ultimate truth. The knowledge of an ordinary person is conventional truth." So it is said. The so-called knowledge of an ordinary person is from the Jewel Source: Just like the traces of birds in the sky, the paths of beings are also non-existent from the beginning. Just like looking at fallen hairs, similarly, observe the peaceful nature of dharma. The image of a face in a mirror, the wise say its nature is empty. So it is said. Even so, for the time being, regard the knowledge of the five objects as unmixed colors. Seizing the enjoyment of forms and other desires. To this, clinging to it, engaging in thoughts of negation and affirmation. Consider illusions as examples of eight illusions. In this way, on the path of practice with aspiration, the phenomena that appear, namely form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, these five objects of desire, the mind of the object-possessor enters into them, and all the illusions that arise as thoughts of negation and affirmation are examined with the examples of eight illusions, appearing but without inherent existence. Those who are accustomed to and realize this are liberated from the city of existence, and are therefore also said to have grasped the beginning of liberation. But do not be content with just that, but magnify the path of the Bodhisattva, the way of which comes from the Great Secret Skillful Means: Shravakas and Bodhisattvas both enter and arise from samadhi, but Shravakas only know their own nirvana, while Bodhisattvas gather sentient beings with the four means of gathering.

whose diligence is never interrupted, and who completely matures sentient beings through the six perfections, and also generates great compassion for sentient beings, that is the skillful means of a Bodhisattva. And so on, extensively explained. Thus, the division of the two truths is such that, at the time of equipoise, if it can be thoroughly analyzed by ultimate wisdom, then it is not the ultimate truth, because the mind is the conventional truth. Characteristics that contradict one and many have never existed in the realm of the mind. Thus, the nature of the ultimate truth is free from the appearance of mind, grasping, and clinging. From that perspective, the appearance of elaboration is conventional, so neither one nor many are established. Therefore, saying "two truths" is just a verbal expression. From a single basis, it does not fall into any extreme, so it is something that cannot be analyzed by the mind. If what can be analyzed by the mind is the ultimate truth, then the horns of a rabbit would also be established as having shape and color. Because this can be analyzed by the mind, it is only a fabrication of the mind. Therefore, all conditioned phenomena, including the eight aggregates of consciousness, are conventional and can never transcend it. Thus, it is extremely contradictory to the ultimate truth. As the Bodhicaryāvatāra says: "The ultimate is not the realm of the mind, the mind is considered to be the conventional truth." Also, as the Indian commentary says: "The term 'ultimate' and so on are mentioned. Here, the term 'ultimate' is a name for everything, but it is said to refer to the indivisible nature of all extremely hidden things. That itself is the peaceful ultimate, it is the true reality, but the true reality that is merely dependent is only a fabrication, because it is the object of conceptual thought." Furthermore, minds such as direct perception with and without aspects are called conventional, because they obscure the seeing of the ultimate truth. This is very clear. Moreover, from the perspective of the appearance of the mind's object and its elaborations, all phenomena are either reduced to one, or they exist as many. But the ultimate truth is extremely contradictory to this, so it is impossible to exist simultaneously with the mind. Even so, the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra says: "The nature of the aggregates and the ultimate nature is the nature that is free from one and many, one and many."
