It bestows abiding. Its function is to serve as the basis for the accumulation of merit and all virtues. Its divisions, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The discipline is called individual liberation, likewise, meditation gives rise to the stainless." Thus, truly taken, that which arises from signs is individual liberation. That which is obtained by the nature of reality are the two that arise from meditation and the stainless: obtaining the mind of actual meditation, and obtaining the ground of the noble ones, such as the path of seeing, which is without outflows. The benefits of such discipline are as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The sons of the conquerors always take the three disciplines, which are the nature of restraint and diligence. Even if they attain the excellent heavens, they do not desire or cling to them. By that discipline itself, they place all beings in the three enlightenments. Because discipline is completely grasped by wisdom, it remains inexhaustible in the world." Thus it is said. The wheel of discipline is the perfection of patience. Here, on the ground of patience in this world, the good fragrance of the Dharma increases, is well protected, and accepting difficulties, how is it not pleasing? Not fearing the profound meaning, there are three aspects. Therein, the essence of patience is endurance, which, like the foundation of the Great Vehicle, bears and endures all aspects of conventional and ultimate reality with the power of intelligence, thereby protecting the sacred Dharma. Its divisions, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Endurance, how not to be displeased, knowing, because of compassion relying on the Dharma, it is truly taught to have five benefits." Therefore, for the sake of attaining Buddhahood for oneself, and for the sake of accomplishing benefit for others, for whichever purpose, no matter what great burdens of hardship and suffering arise, willingly accepting and enduring the burden is the patience of accepting difficulties. Whatever harm or wrongdoing others inflict on oneself, directly or indirectly, whatever harm occurs, the complete habituation of the mind to prevent anger from arising is the patience of not being displeased by harm. Not having one's devotion to thinking about the Dharma stolen away, and not giving rise to fear of the profound meaning, is the patience without an object. The cause of these is great compassion, and the results are five, as stated in the sutra: Not increasing hatred, not increasing strife, increasing happiness and mental happiness, dying without regret.
