It is not through cessation but is naturally peaceful. Because there is no entity, it is subtle, and because it does not establish its own nature, it is difficult to observe. The object of appearance is not interrupted, and the notion of grasping onto it is destroyed, this is the samadhi that possesses the extreme abandonment of faults. As it was said before: Samadhi is the place of equanimity, peaceful, subtle, and difficult to observe, because all notions are destroyed, therefore it is called samadhi. In such a state, tied with the rope of mindfulness, the object is continuous, and not stolen by factors such as dullness and agitation, this is calm abiding. Completely understanding its nature is the way to determine it as insight. As the noble "Cloud of Jewels Sutra" says: Calm abiding is single-pointedness of mind, insight is correct discrimination. Thus it is said. Therefore, knowing that one abides without conceptualizing on the object, from which arises extreme pliancy of body and mind, this is equanimity, which is the nature of calm abiding, but it must also be related to insight. The temporary aspect of calm abiding only suppresses afflictions, it does not eliminate obscurations. But the discriminating wisdom that is of the same entity, the same essence, at the same time, and has the same function of eliminating obscurations, thoroughly destroys habits, and sees all phenomena as illusions, therefore it is insight with subsequent attainment. As the noble "Explication of the Thought Sutra" says: Meditation suppresses afflictions, wisdom destroys habits. And as the "Entering Non-Conceptualization Sutra" says: Transcendent wisdom equally sees all phenomena as being like the center of the sky. What is attained after that is seen as illusion, mirage, and the moon in water. If divided, there are three kinds of meditation: Child's Play, Approximation, and Meaningful Skill, and the Tathagata's Goodness. And there are four meditations with and without investigation. Similarly, there are four formless absorptions, these are the number of types. The samadhi in the continuum of those who have not entered the path is meditation, formless, Child's Play Approximation. The samadhi of those who have entered the path, the accumulation and preparation stages, is known as Meaningful Skill, which manifests the path of liberation. The samadhi of the noble ones from the first ground upwards is the Tathagata's Goodness because it is without outflows. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: By

Childlike access meditation, meditation that discerns meaning well, and meditation of the Tathagata's goodness. Thus, the childlike access meditation is the samadhi meditation of the continuum of those who have not entered the path, and is possessed by those who are formless, which is the worldly path. Among the two transcendental paths, the meditation that discerns meaning well is the path to liberation manifested through the samadhi of accumulation and junction after entering the path. The meditation of the Tathagata's goodness is the stainless samadhi of the continuum of the noble ones from the first ground onwards. The essence of all is holding the mind inward. The cause is continuous mindfulness and diligence. If distracted, restore it again. The function is to generate happiness and accomplish miraculous powers. The result is the attainment of clairvoyance and so on. Thus, the essence of meditation is that the mind abides in one-pointedness within. The cause of accomplishment is continuous mindfulness, which must be accomplished depending on the condition of diligence. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The mind abides within, relying on mindfulness and diligence." At that time, if the attention wavers and becomes distracted, one should stabilize quiescence with the nine ways of settling the mind as taught in the Perfection of Wisdom. The command is to settle the mind on this and that, to settle it continuously, to settle it repeatedly, to settle it closely, to tame it, to pacify it, to completely pacify it, to make it one-pointed, and to settle it evenly. The first is to settle the mind on the object. The second is to settle continuously on that same object. The third is to recognize distraction and abandon it. The fourth is to abandon distraction and repeatedly strive to settle on that same object. The fifth is to generate joy. The sixth is to see the faults of distraction and completely pacify displeasure. The seventh is to eliminate dullness and sleep. The eighth is that there is no entry because there is no manifestation. The ninth is to be equanimous when the mind has become even. These are the words taught by Lord Maitreya. At that time, one should strive to abandon the opposing factors of samadhi. The Earth-Essence Ten-Wheel Sutra says: "Then...
