Then the Bhagavan addressed the Great Brahma, saying: "There are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt upon or practiced. If an evil practitioner of yoga follows even one of these, then the roots of virtue in the desire realm will not be fully accomplished. Even if they are accomplished, they will immediately be lost and degenerate. What need is there to mention hearing about the samadhis of the form and formless realms, the three vehicles, or the one vehicle? What are these ten? For example, some people in the world want to meditate on samadhi, but they are preoccupied with the necessities of life and afflicted by the means of livelihood. Some want to meditate on samadhi (and this applies to all), but their discipline is lax, they commit many wrongdoings, they view things perversely, they are attached to the good and bad omens of the world, their body and mind are not subdued, their mind is restless and agitated, they do not incline towards the noble ones, they indulge their senses, they enjoy gossiping and creating discord, they revile the noble ones with harsh words and act domineeringly, they speak nonsense and lie, they are greedy and jealous and dislike the benefits, respect, and gains of others, they harbor hatred, they always generate harmful thoughts towards sentient beings, and they hold wrong views, believing that there is no cause and effect. Also, for example, they are fond of and attached to things to be done, fond of and attached to jokes, they indulge in sleep, they seek material gain, they are fond of beautiful forms, pleasant sounds, fragrant smells, delicious tastes, soft touches, and they are fond of and attached to thoughts and investigations." And so forth, the Buddha spoke extensively. In the Mindfulness Sutra, it is also said: "Noble sons, these ten things obstruct the meditation and recitation of the bodhisattvas. What are these ten? For example, listening to noisy talk, drawing pictures, composing poetry, studying the constellations, contemplating the stars, claiming acquired food as one's own, thinking of accumulating wealth like a rakshasa, relying on kings, not consulting the wise, inviting others to enjoy comfort, and dwelling in haunted places—these are the ten. Therefore, abandon these and let the stream of mind...

By merely abiding in non-distraction, one should cultivate common meditative stabilization. The function is to attain extreme pliancy of body and mind, thereby enabling one to abide in happiness in this life and serving as the basis for accomplishing supernormal powers. The result is the attainment of qualities common to Hearers, such as clairvoyance, liberation into emptiness, cessation, and subjugation. The Ornament of the Sutras states: "It generates happiness, masters the realm of clairvoyance, is the lord of all dharmas, and possesses these three. Having fully understood such meditative stabilization, the wise should cultivate it correctly." Thus, merely relying on meditative stabilization in one's own continuum has immeasurable benefits: One turns away from the qualities of desire, afflictions naturally subside, one delights in solitude, experiences various doors of samadhi, and accomplishes the welfare of others by arising clairvoyance. The Bhagavan said: "Subhuti, just as a bird without wings cannot fly in the sky, similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cannot teach the Dharma without relying on clairvoyance." Among the six clairvoyances, the Treasury of Knowledge states: "Miraculous power, ear, mind, and, former lives, death, and birth, and the knowledge of exhaustion should be done first." That is, the wisdom of knowing the realm of miraculous power, the wisdom of knowing the divine ear, the wisdom of knowing the minds of others, the wisdom of remembering former lives, the wisdom of knowing death and birth, and the knowledge of exhaustion should be done first. When explaining worldly meditative stabilization, it is said: "The approximation of the first dhyana has investigation and analysis, the actual practice has no investigation but only analysis, the remaining three have neither investigation nor analysis, each preceding one is the cause of the approximation of the following one, it is said to be the basis of the noble path." Among these, there are two types of enjoyment: enjoyment of form and enjoyment of formlessness. Enjoyment of form refers to the four dhyanas of learners and ordinary beings, their approximation, and the equipoise attained through their power. Possessing aspiration, not possessing the limbs of enlightenment, it is the cause for accomplishing the peak of existence, possessing the feeling of equanimity, and possessing investigation and analysis, it is the approximation of the first dhyana, which is the application.
