It is the mind. Moreover, it transcends the desire for sensual pleasures and sinful dharmas, and is endowed with investigation, analysis, joy, and happiness. At that time, it is called the first dhyana. From that, without investigation, only with analysis, the mind of the first dhyana, is said to be special. When one is free from investigation and analysis, free from the desire of the first dhyana's realm, and endowed with joy, happiness, and complete inner delight, at that time, it is called the second dhyana. Free from the desire of the second dhyana, endowed with happiness, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, at that time, it is called the third dhyana. When one is free from the desire of the third dhyana's realm, neither suffering nor happiness, but endowed with equanimity and mindfulness, at that time, it is called the fourth dhyana. The preparatory stages of the latter three dhyanas, as explained in the Sutra Pitaka, are performed by their respective preceding stages. Similarly, the four formless absorptions and the cessation absorption, these nine, are merely the basis for the noble path. There are six obstacles to attaining these samadhis: laziness, forgetting the object of focus, sinking, excitement, non-exertion, and exertion. As antidotes to these, one should cultivate the eight abandonments, which are: faith, desire, effort, and pliancy. These four are the antidotes to laziness: faith with great confidence in the qualities of attaining samadhi, initiating effort with desire, making the mind workable through its power, and then making the body and mind very pliant, thereby reversing laziness. Similarly, mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object of focus, awareness is the antidote to sinking and excitement, reflection is the antidote to non-exertion, and equanimity is the antidote to exertion. If one possesses these eight abandonments, then samadhi becomes workable, and because one can accomplish all qualities such as miraculous powers, therefore, the Sutra Pitaka also says: Cultivate the feet of miraculous powers endowed with the eight abandonments. Thus it was taught. The dhyana that transcends the world and generates all qualities is.

Grasped by compassion and supreme wisdom, possessing many samadhis, accomplishing all activities. Abandoning the grasping and clinging of coemergent and subsequent cognition of mind-only, after arising from equipoise, obtaining vast freedom. All exist up to the seventh ground. Without desiring that, possessing the limbs of enlightenment, abandoning existence, relying on the samadhi that well distinguishes meaning, cultivating the special good samadhi of the Tathagatas arises from the practice of yoga that unites shamatha and vipashyana. As it says in the Noble Sutra Unraveling of Intentions: Maitreya, whether it is the Shravakas, or the Bodhisattvas, or the Tathagatas, all worldly and transworldly virtuous dharmas should be known as the fruit of shamatha and vipashyana. And: Whatever various samadhis of the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas I have taught, all of those should be known as being encompassed by shamatha and vipashyana. Therefore, all the doors of samadhi are encompassed by the union of shamatha and vipashyana. Furthermore, vipashyana without a stable shamatha is like a lamp in the wind. Shamatha without vipashyana cannot cut through all the nets of obscurations, just as the shamatha of the four dhyanas and the formless realms only revolves in the peak of existence. Among these, by the power of shamatha, the mind that is moved by the wind of conceptualization is stopped, and by the power of vipashyana, one cannot be moved by the net of evil views of ignorance and the view of the aggregates, etc., and one will not be suppressed by evil doctrines and the unstated mind. As it says in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: By the power of shamatha, one becomes unmoving, by vipashyana, one becomes like a mountain. Thus it was declared. Among these, the Shravakas have more samadhi and less wisdom, the Bodhisattvas are the opposite, and the Tathagatas have both equally, thereby seeing the wisdom aspect of omniscient wisdom. As it says in the Noble Mahaparinirvana Sutra: The Shravakas do not see the lineage of the Tathagatas, because of their
