Thus, the power of poison can only make the body of one lifetime uncomfortable, but it cannot harm future lives. Moreover, if used skillfully, it will turn into essence and medicine. The faults of the five objects related to desire are: when enjoyed for a short time, they appear as virtues, like tasting delicious food, but in reality, they lead to the generation of all collections of faults, and they are objects that even secret mantras and medicines cannot cure. The 'Letter to a Friend' says: Objects and poison are similar, pleasant only when first experienced. Objects and poison are similar, unbearable because of their harsh ripening. Objects and poison are similar, making the darkness of ignorance thick. Objects and poison are similar, difficult to reverse their power and wavering. Objects and poison, if examined with certainty by the mind, if the fault is slight, poison is easy to handle, but objects whose nature is unbearable are not. Poison only becomes poison in one lifetime. Objects also become poison in future lives. Poison, when mixed with poison, becomes completely pacified. It can be cured by supreme secret mantras and antidote medicines. If used skillfully, poison can benefit people. But extremely poisonous objects are never like that. It also tells of the faults of those who crave objects: Just as a baby elephant born on the edge of a deep pit craves only a few mouthfuls of grass, and falls into the pit before it can be satisfied, so too is the desire for worldly happiness. The 'Letter to a Friend' also says: Those who are always unstable and wavering towards the objects of the six senses, compared to those who conquer enemy armies on the battlefield, the wise consider the former to be the greatest heroes. Therefore, those who conquer enemies on the battlefield are not as great as those who first cut off the senses and conquer them, the latter are considered true heroes. Therefore, the objects of the senses and the interdependent mind

The untamed and unpacified elephant, that extremely ignorant fellow, there is no greater means than employing the illusion of deception, so one should lead it to meditate in the peaceful forest until the aggregate of formations is carried to the coffin. As it is said in "Words of Seclusion": As long as four men have not lifted the body onto the bier, one should strive to go to a secluded place and practice peaceful samadhi. Thus it is said. What are the benefits of going to the forest? The borderlands or nomadic regions are pleasing to the mind, and sadness naturally increases; one is separated from the friends of sin, such as commerce and agriculture; there is no burden of taxes or levies; one does not hear unpleasant sounds of birds and animals; clear water and abundant fruits are available for enjoyment; spacious rock caves and houses made of leaves; the shade of trees is cool and comfortable to be with; one often thinks, when will I be able to dwell together with them? Among these, the borderlands are places near the end of villages, and nomadic or secluded places should be at least a yojana (about 11 kilometers) away from human habitation. These are ideal places for those who are weary of samsara, and sadness arises naturally. There are no distractions of commerce and agriculture, one is not deceived by sinful friends, and there are no taxes or levies. Life is naturally easy to obtain, and one is not troubled by trivial matters. The birds sing sweetly, and the wild animals play leisurely, with no disharmony whatsoever. Clear water, flowers, fruits, sprouts, medicines, roots, leaves, wind, and so on can be relied upon as food, so there are vast enjoyments that please the noble ones. Natural caves and simple leaf houses, with few affairs. The shade of trees is skilled at dispelling heat, and it is comfortable to be with them, often thinking when will we be able to dwell together with them, thus generating joy and becoming weary of family and noisy places. As it is said in "Letter to a Student": Possessing trees with roots, fruits, bark, leaves, and other perfections, and forests that do not need care, and cool and unceasing streams flowing from the mountains. On the banks of rivers, fruits and flowers are scattered, beautifully adorned, what is there that is not pleasing? Yet one is deceived and lingers by the hellish family. Thus it is said. Praising from the perspective of benefits: There, the four seasons are new guests, and the forest displays change and realization.
