In samsara, the suffering endured while practicing austerities for the sake of enlightenment is borne according to the strength of the practitioner's mind. Therefore, small austerities can fulfill the need to accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. However, if one fears losing limbs such as hands and feet, it is because one has not weighed the importance, and only the ignorant me would feel fear. In countless eons, being cut, pierced, burned, and skinned numerous times will not lead to the attainment of enlightenment. The suffering I endure to achieve enlightenment is limited, just like inflicting wounds on the body to eliminate pain, internal consumption, and harm. All doctors also treat and eliminate uncomfortable diseases. Therefore, to eliminate many sufferings, one should endure small discomforts. Therefore, if one is afraid because the path of the perfections requires abandoning body and life, it is because one has not deeply understood. There is no mandatory constraint between generating the idea of "difficult to do," but rather a gradual habituation according to one's own mental strength. Such ordinary medical methods are not used by great doctors, but rather they use very gentle rituals to cure countless serious illnesses. When giving vegetables and other items, the guide first leads the way. After getting used to it, gradually, one even gives up one's own flesh. When one's own body has generated the idea of being like vegetables, then what difficulty is there in giving up flesh and so on? That is to say, when habituation reaches its peak, the realization of the lack of inherent existence of samsara, like an illusion, becomes stable, thereby preventing attachment to one's own body. And because the power of emptiness and great compassion increases, one abandons evil. Because the cause is reversed, the suffering of experiencing the result will not arise. There is no suffering because evil is abandoned, and there is no displeasure because one is wise. Like this, inverted cognition and evil harm the mind and body, merit brings physical happiness, and wisdom brings mental happiness. For the benefit of others, even if one remains in samsara, what is there to be weary of for those with compassion? In short, all the Buddhas who have come, are dwelling, and have gone in the three times have relied on diligence as a companion on the path to manifest enlightenment.

There is no exception. In particular, our teacher, with bodhisattvas who generated the aspiration earlier than himself, such as Maitreya, also attained Buddhahood earlier, which arose from the difference in diligence. After reasoning in this way, the manner of arousing pride is described in the "Ratnamegha Sutra": "Bodhisattvas are like this: the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Samyaksaṃbuddhas, those who have already attained enlightenment, those who are currently attaining enlightenment, and those who will attain perfect enlightenment in the future, also attain perfect enlightenment, attain perfect enlightenment, and will attain perfect enlightenment through this kind of method, this kind of path, and this kind of diligence." It also says, "Those Tathāgatas have only become Tathāgatas, and have not attained perfect enlightenment. I, too, must attain perfect enlightenment in unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, with the diligence common to all sentient beings, and with the diligence focused on all sentient beings. I will seek and strive in that way." It is as it is said. In particular, thinking that life has no leisure is the way to generate diligence as an antidote. My life has reached the end of the day, and quickly, quickly, the darkness of death approaches. If one encounters the activities of samsara, which are more numerous than the stars, then that breath will not come out. Like this, this life is extremely unstable, like the sun moving towards the western mountain, so do not trust it, or there is no ability to stay for a long time, so determine that the activities of samsara are like the stars, numerous in number, and cannot be completed even if done, and even if they exist, they are meaningless. After thinking in this way, one needs to be diligent, as it says in the "Sutra Requested by Vimalakirti," Great King, the nature of all bodies is like this: impermanent, unstable, untrustworthy, of the nature of complete destruction, short-lived, not dwelling, unstable, moving, ultimately destructive, momentary, ultimately sinful, the door of exhaustion and destruction, ultimately of the nature of separation, accompanied by destruction, full of suffering and strife, falling off, destruction, decay, collapse, scattering.
