Four offenses, one hundred and twelve deeds. Two hundred fifty-three categories. This means that the two hundred and fifty-three objects of training are summarized by their definite number. First, any of the four root defeats, if a monk who possesses vows engages in it, even if concealed for a moment, will cause the vows to be completely severed, which is a root defeat. For example, if the root of a tree is cut, the branches will not grow. Because the opposing side destroys the antidote without power, it is called "defeat," or because this defeat leads to defeat, it is called "defeated by others." This is also explained through the Vinaya discourse. From the thirteenth year after the Buddha attained enlightenment, in Shravasti (Savatthi), because the monk Sudinna was controlled by the defilement of desire and engaged in non-chaste conduct with his former household, this precept was established. For non-chaste conduct, only when the four limbs of basis, intention, action, and culmination are complete, will it lead to defeat. The basis is: the object of reliance, the limb that can experience the taste of pleasure arising from sexual intercourse. It must be complete and suitable in all aspects, that is, any of the three doors of the vagina, anus, or mouth. The intention is: without shame and fear, without confused cognition, and with attachment, thus generating the motivation to experience the pleasure of touch. The action is: combining the object of reliance with the healthy and usable organ that serves as the basis, and rubbing. The culmination is: obtaining pleasure after surpassing the boundary of the three paths. That is, if these four limbs are complete, it is called the defeat of non-chaste conduct, that is, falling away from pure conduct. Second, the defeat of taking what is not given is: the cause is that in Rajgir (the capital of Magadha around the 6th century BC), the monk Nandaka stole the wood of King Ajatashatru to build his own house, so this precept was established. The basis is: an object owned by another, with complete value. The standard of value is one-fourth of a Karshapana. Burnt shell ash is mixed with balls and petals and eaten, twenty shells equal one Kakani. Four Kakani equal one Mashaka, that is, eighty shells. Twenty Mashaka equal one Karshapana, that is, one thousand six hundred shells. One-fourth of that equals four hundred shells, which is the standard of the value of a Mashaka.

Generally, value changes with time. When the Buddha was alive, twenty mashakas could be exchanged for one karshapana. But in the time of Master Shakya Od, the value decreased, and sixty mashakas were considered equal to one karshapana. Here, it is according to the root sutra that the middle measure is five mashakas. So, if it is determined as a gold tang, as it was in the time of Ljangdor, the ruler Relpachen, following the Indian standard, one mashaka can be exchanged for two gold sevas. Five mashakas are a quarter of a karshapana, which is ten gold sevas, or equivalent to highland barley, etc. As the Vinaya Karika says: "Stealing a quarter of a karshapana, the thief will lose the precepts." Therefore, knowingly that it is someone else's property, with the motivation of greedily desiring to steal another's wealth, the action is to take it as one's own through body and speech, and ultimately stealing it oneself, or having someone else steal it, the object is completely harmed, and one has the thought of obtaining it. The third is the defeat of taking life: the cause is in the grove of Pong trees, where sixty meditators were meditating on the contemplation of unattractiveness, and because they were disgusted by the impurity of the body, they had Dexion Bek killed, and therefore the rule was established. The basis is a human being or one who has taken human form, and is a different continuum from oneself. The thought is to clearly know the object to be killed, the motivation is anger or belonging to the category of death, pursuing the purpose of killing, the action is to use poison, weapons, or to say words praising death to make him die, or to have someone else kill him, and to express joy in killing, etc., as conditions, and ultimately the life of the one to be killed is cut off before oneself. Even if one person kills, all monks involved in the killing plan will commit a root downfall, as the Abhidharmakosha says: "For a single purpose, such as an army, all are like the executor." The fourth is the defeat of lying: the cause is in a vast place, where five hundred fishermen, after becoming monks, established the rule because of lying about superior human qualities. The basis is the object to whom the lie is spoken, a person gathered by a different continuum from oneself, and possessing five characteristics of human speech: able to speak, able to understand meaning, consciousness naturally exists, not a eunuch, and not hermaphrodite. The words spoken are superior to the desire realm.
