Pages 301 to 400. Pages 301 to 400. It is with the thought of taking (as a wife). The celibate devotee and these two are not householders because they have abandoned household life, and they are not renunciates because they have not taken vows. In the past, during the time when the teachings were flourishing, the great and wonderful teacher Chandrakirti also seemed to rely solely on this category of individual liberation. Furthermore, those who are known as devotees who uphold the Three Refuges are designated as devotees merely by entering the Buddhist fold. Since it is only the basis for all vows and does not generate vows in itself, the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge also states: "It is merely well-practiced, but it is not a vow." However, the Lower Ones and the Sutra followers consider it reasonable to regard it as a qualified devotee even if it is not a devotee's vow, because the Nirvana Sutra states: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha is a true devotee." The novice monk's vows are to abandon killing, stealing others' property, non-celibacy, lying, adulterated alcohol, dancing, garlands, large and high beds, afternoon meals, and taking gold and silver. Holding the ten precepts is special. The qualities of morality are being undiminished, faultless, unmixed, undefiled, untainted, having independence, praised by the wise, and accomplishing samadhi, which are eight in total. Undiminished means not transgressing even one of the vows taken correctly. If one transgresses even one, it will be diminished, and if one transgresses many precepts, it will become faulty, and the absence of both is faultless. Unmixed means not mixed with unwholesome elements. Undefiled means not entirely dedicated to worldly and enjoyable benefits. Untainted means not changing into another form. Thus, morality with the five qualities of being undiminished, etc., is independent because it is liberated from craving. Such morality is praised by the wise and the noble assembly. By placing the mind in equanimity with morality, one also accomplishes samadhi. Just as the earth is the cause of birth, dwelling, and growth for beings who can and cannot move, morality is also the basis and foundation of all qualities such as samadhi, therefore (one should learn).

The venerable abbot Arya said: "Although your discipline is not damaged, do not underestimate it. Rely on those who are pure and untainted. Just as discipline is like the earth, with fields, grain can grow, and without fields, it cannot. Discipline is the foundation of all virtues." Thus he spoke. The method for purifying such discipline is that after receiving full ordination, for ten or fifteen years, without interruption, one should possess the two qualities of stability and wisdom. If there is a preceptor, rely on the preceptor. If not, in front of a bhikshu worthy of being a lama, perform the ritual of taking residence. As the Kārikā says: "In front of the lamas, one should not spit, discard shoes, or vomit. One should not chew on toothpicks, nor sit on a dignified seat. One should not jump in front, nor wear only one garment, etc." Thus, relying on the preceptor together, one should not act independently in all matters, but should ask for instructions from him. As the "Friendly Letter" also says: "Relying on a virtuous friend is the perfection of pure conduct, as the Tathagata has said." Thus it is. What are the objects that they should study? The "Three Hundred Verses" says: "Whoever abandons killing, stealing, non-chastity, lying, drinking alcohol, etc., dancing, garlands, etc., high and large beds, untimely food, and receiving gold and silver, is one who conquers the enemy of afflictions with discipline. This is the discipline of a śrāmaṇera, as firm as mercury. It is the means of extracting the sharp teeth of death, and it is the glorious empowerment of obtaining complete enlightenment." Thus it is. What are the ten roots that they should study? They are the ten things to be abandoned, namely the four root vows and the six branch vows. Thus, by teaching the ten coarse faults to be abandoned, one identifies the ten coarse dharmas to be abandoned. Among these, the first of the four root vows is to know the boundary of abandoning harming the lives of others. Therefore, the precept of abandoning killing is established. Killing someone who has the designation of a human being or a human fetus, stealing property of complete value, engaging in impure conduct, and telling the great lie of claiming to possess superior human qualities—if these four root vows are complete with the branches of basis, intention, action, and consummation, then it is called a defeat, which means the destruction of discipline. Among these, what is not concealed can be restored, and what is concealed cannot be restored. This is the view of the Sarvāstivāda school itself. As the "Light Sutra" says: "With the root sins such as killing, the discipline of a śrāmaṇera is destroyed."
