The three divisions of the sects are: the Sarvastivada school, the protectors' school, and the Sthavira school, which are generally summarized as the eighteen schools of the Sravakas. The distinctions between these schools are also scattered in the Vinaya Pitaka, and are clearly explained in the 'Light', 'Wheel of Recitation', and 'Division of Sects'. The most prevalent in Tibet is the Sarvastivada school. Although these schools differ in form, they are all related to the practices of the five classes of ordained monks and cannot exceed the scope of what Shakyamuni Buddha established. Therefore, in accordance with the omens of Kṛki, after strict screening, it is necessary to obtain the authority of all precepts and strictly observe them. If they are not observed, from the perspective of fundamental downfalls, instruction can be given openly and remedies can be made. However, until the ultimate fruit of individual liberation, the state of Arhat, is attained, the root cause of defeat cannot be completely eliminated. Therefore, attaining liberation will be delayed for a long time. As it is said in the Vinaya Pitaka: 'One will not hear the Dharma, and if one hears it, one will quickly forget it. One will not realize the stages of the path, or they will never arise.' Due to the fault of violating the precepts, like the leaves of the Ela tree, one will fall into the animal realm, and according to the severity of the offenses such as defeat, remainder, gross offense, confession offense, and misdeed, one will suffer in order from the hot hells to the reviving hells. This situation is extensively explained in the Sutras. The benefits of guarding the precepts are: generally, in this life, one can be liberated from disease, the king's punishment, and poverty. Taking precepts with this thought is the precept of fear protection; merely aiming to obtain the happiness and fruits of gods and humans in the future is the precept of good wishes. Although these two precepts cannot liberate one from samsara, they only temporarily combine with their respective happiness and fruits. As the god of Sa-ga said: 'The most excellent wealth is perfection, and one is born into the pure palace of the gods.' When the thought of renunciation arises in someone's mind, it becomes the characteristic individual liberation precept, because the nature of this precept is to certainly liberate one from samsara. As it is said in the 'Earth Store Ten Wheels Sutra': 'Without looking at all the ripening of beings, one guards the precepts.' In this way, it tells how the younger brother Nanda displayed miracles with the precept of good wishes, showing the suffering of hell.

Just as (a monk) abides in the nature of individual liberation vows and attains the state of an Arhat. Therefore, those who possess wisdom should not merely consider upholding moral discipline as sufficient. Regardless of where the nature of samsara transmigrates, one should recognize its painful nature, like a pit of fire or the depths of the ocean. Taking the vows of individual liberation solely with the intention of renunciation is the tenet of the Sravaka's own school. Furthermore, if it is embraced with the Mahayana's aspiration for enlightenment, then the eight types of individual liberation vows will also become the individual liberation vows of a Bodhisattva, which is permissible. The Pandit of Bengal also said: The vows of individual liberation should also be elevated by the mind of Bodhicitta. Such a statement exists. Regarding the benefits, the Sutra of Utmost Affection for Monks states: 'The moral discipline that is exceedingly excellent, the person who is restrained possesses beauty, abides near to discipline and Nirvana, the training in moral discipline is supreme. Even in one day, that person accumulates immeasurable merit, and accomplishes the fruit of Buddhahood.' Thus it is said. The Scholar Hero said: 'Divine substances, joyful human enjoyments, supreme bliss, exquisite divine tastes, what wonder is there that arises from moral discipline? Behold, all the Buddha's teachings arise from it.' Thus it is said. In particular, during the time when the teachings were flourishing, one could protect the complete training. Now, as the teachings are nearing decline, those who enter the path of the teachings are even more difficult to tame and restrain, distant from renunciation, fond of associating with householders and following them. In such times, even the benefit of protecting a single precept for one day and night is immeasurable. The Samadhiraja Sutra states: 'For countless eons, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, with a pure mind, offering food and drink, umbrellas, banners, garlands of lamps, serving countless billions of Buddhas. If, when the sacred Dharma is extremely decaying, when the Sugata's teachings are about to perish, one practices a single precept during the day and night, this merit is far superior to that.' Thus it is said. Now, in order to show how the three vows abide in the continuum of a single individual. By dedicating to Nirvana, it becomes the higher discipline; by accomplishing benefit for others, it becomes the Bodhisattva vows; if one receives a proper empowerment, then it becomes mantra.
