And also allowed to wear boots with shafts. The basis for medicine is: when the Teacher was residing in Shravasti, the monks became emaciated due to autumn diseases, and they were allowed to take medicine. Among them, there are detailed distinctions regarding the appropriate time, appropriate dosage, seven days, and the manner of holding until the end of life. In terms of meaning, the medicine that is mainly blessed for eliminating accumulated diseases has no other use than being able to be enjoyed. Therefore, it is allowed to set up a place for storing medicine, called a "medicine room." There, raw boiling, aged oil, etc., can be done, so it is called a "medicine room." The sutra says, "The blessed cooking and placing are no different from the outside." There are four ways to bless the medicine room: first, laying bricks; second, the entire process from the beginning of construction to completion; third, praying and blessing after completion; fourth, blessing in case of emergencies. Among them, the latter two also apply to converting old houses into medicine rooms. The basis for residence is: in Varanasi, the householder De-zang requested the Teacher to build a monastery, and the Teacher allowed it. It is said in the sutra: "A monastery should be built. A clean room should be built in the center of one side. In front of it is the gatehouse. The square is the best." And so on. After construction, regarding the manner of inquiring about Vajrapani Yaksha on the door, and the five-spoke wheel in the gatehouse, etc., and "Do not abandon the monastery," etc., one must strive to serve and reside, and guide with whatever conduct one desires. And so on, the sutra that details how to apply the methods of permission and prohibition to the basis of various conditions for peaceful living is also definitely here. As it says in the Nirvana Sutra: "For those who have renounced with the mind of Nirvana and possess discipline, it is also appropriate to give hundreds of thousands of clothes, hundreds of flavors of food, and five hundred-story houses. This is also the property of the Sangha. It is also permissible for those below the level of non-learners, and for ordinary people. It is not permissible for those who have broken their vows." As such, those who have reached the peak of learning are fields of merit, and therefore do not dwell on the path of permission and prohibition. Learners.

Because the noble ones are able to purify those merits, they are allowed to use the offerings given by others. Even ordinary beings, if they are pure in discipline and diligent in reading and reciting, are permitted by the Buddha, and therefore there is no fault. If one is merely pure in discipline, but their mind is consumed by laziness, and they do not possess the qualities of hearing, contemplation, and meditation, it is like a poor person's debt, which must be repaid later. Those who break their vows are always forbidden from using the property of faith; if they do, they will experience the suffering of falling into the lower realms. In the Sutra of the Buddha's Treasury, it says: Shariputra, a monk who has broken his vows must cut and chop off his own flesh for hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas to repay the benefactor. Even if he is born as a livestock animal, he will have to carry heavy burdens. If even a part of a hair divided into a million parts cannot be melted, what need is there to mention clothes, food, bedding, and medicine, etc.? It also says: Shariputra, in a land filled with rust, I cannot tolerate those who act according to my rites, let alone dwell with a monk who has broken his vows. Why is that? Because whatever is taken by the hand of a monk who has broken his vows becomes a deadly poison to a monk who upholds his vows. Thus, the sage of Sakya also said: The unlearned use as masters; the learned use as those who are given; those who possess meditation and reading, because of the Buddha's permission, there is no fault in using; the rest who are consumed by laziness, those who claim themselves use as if using loans; for those who break their vows, at any time, the use of monasteries and other necessities is forbidden. The basis of action, which is universally applicable to all, can be understood elsewhere. In short, to summarize, the cause of the discipline of restraining misconduct is solely the guarding of the senses, and its obstacle is the unwholesome friend, as stated in the sutras. For example, lack of faith, lack of shame, lack of embarrassment, laziness, perverted wisdom, not guarding the doors of the senses, overeating, not knowing the measure of food, not striving to sleep in the upper and lower parts of the night, recalling past laughter, speech, joy, and affection, and virtuous...
