It is called starting from the first day. As it is said. The duration is in the Root Vinaya. One should vow to observe the summer retreat. For three months. As it is said. The necessity is from the Vinaya Pitaka: To avoid ridicule and harm to beings, to avoid harm to body and life, to repair what is broken, to reduce affairs and increase learning and thinking, to generate prohibition and firmness. Just as it is said. If it is the early summer retreat, then on the fifteenth of the sixth Tibetan month, and if it is the late summer retreat, then after performing the Uposatha on the fifteenth of the seventh month, one or more monks who are qualified to be assigned a residence should be appointed through the ritual of questioning and requesting. After being appointed in this way, prepare a straight wooden stick of one cubit in length, without cracks, holes, good color, and soft to the touch. Anoint it with fragrances such as sandalwood and saffron. Place a white silk cloth on the edge of the box, wrap it around, and place it at the end of the elder. After that, as a discipline, do not dump waste at the source of water, quickly transport the items that are needed and used, be diligent in virtuous roots, purify misdeeds, do not cut on the ridges of fields, and if hail occurs, block it, etc. Through these, express the willingness to reside here, and enjoy this wooden stick, and speak of not creating disputes within the Sangha, etc., as a discipline. After that, distribute the wooden sticks, understand the number received, and then collect them back, etc., all these procedures should be understood according to the ritual. The main practice is: whether it is the early or late summer retreat, within the sixteenth day, in a residence with a mattress and covering, in front of a monk who possesses nine qualities, such as pure full ordination, whether it is the early or late summer retreat, state one's name and vow to reside for three months, and be skillful in means. That is to say, vows other than those made during the Nakshatra of Jyeshtha and Ashadha will not be valid, and vows for less than three months are also not allowed. In general, if one does not vow to reside, even if one is not allowed to reside, one is still residing. As it is said, therefore, one should specifically vow to reside here in a place where there is no other place to go. Making such a vow in one's heart is also effective, because it is not contradictory to the meaning. If, for the sake of Dharma-related activities, it becomes necessary to leave the boundary from one day to before the seventh night ends, then before that

Therefore, it is necessary to purify the number of days spent and bestow blessings in the presence of a monk possessing the nine qualities. Without having been blessed, one should not allow the dawn to break outside. Thus it is said. If dawn breaks, the fault of disrupting the summer retreat will occur. Even if returning during the day, if one unnecessarily crosses the boundary, there is the transgression of entering a path. If one exceeds the limit of a distant call, then a heavier fundamental transgression is incurred. Generally, the blessing of seven days should not exceed forty days, and some also hold that even during the last six days of the summer retreat, blessings should not be conferred, as it is explicitly stated. However, in the case of reconciling a hundred thousand monks, etc., there is no fault as long as the task is diligently pursued but not yet accomplished. Third, the basis for the dissolution of the summer retreat: When the Teacher was dwelling in Shravasti, because the monks had observed a vow of silence and were dwelling in retreat in a certain region, it was permitted to dissolve the summer retreat of the Sangha based on the three grounds of seeing, hearing, and suspecting. The definition is that among the three bases, it arises in reliance on the practice of the summer retreat that purifies the Dharma; therefore, it is offered with the mantra that distinguishes the occasion. Regarding the boundaries of the early and later summer retreats, if the dissolution takes place before the middle autumn month or the second lesser autumn month, from half a month to about seven days, if there is any conflict, one should request forgiveness and adorn the monastery, etc. On the night of the fourteenth, the Dharma should be definitively established. On the fifteenth day, all the Sangha should gather, greet each other respectfully, and, standing, make prostrations, saying: 'Please forgive all that is contrary to the mind of the Sangha during the summer retreat.' Then, summoning a senior monk to perform the duties, the procedure should be followed like the Sojong, from the third continuous one to the confession of the novice monk. The novice monks should be separated. For those who are unable to assemble, and those who need to receive the dissolution, they should receive it with the mantra of a single offering, and skillful means should be employed. The one receiving it recites what is known as the mantra spoken to the Sangha: 'Reverend Sangha, please listen,' etc. The necessity of offering the dissolution is like offering a completely pure Sojong. For non-common transgressions, it is like during the Sojong.
