If one has doubts about something like this, one should say, "I will confess this transgression before the monks, and today I will perform the sojong. Tomorrow morning, I will restore this transgression according to the Dharma." Say this once. If one hesitates, replace the phrase "tomorrow morning" with: "Tomorrow morning, I will ask the monks who hold the Sutras, the monks who hold the Vinaya, and the mothers who hold the Matrika, and after dispelling doubts and hesitations, I will restore this transgression according to the Dharma." Say this. Summon the one who performs the actions, and without telling others, confess with the mind. Then, in order to enter the third stage of the lineage, perform prostrations, recite sutras, and dedicate the merit. One who is suitable, such as the disciplinarian, should encourage the recitation of sutras with peaceful conduct, and then all the abbots and others should stand, and after the sutras are recited, say "Auspicious." Speak of impermanent things such as stars, flickering lamps, and so on. Then, again encourage the making of four tormas, and dedicate them in the same way. After that, encourage the performance of prostrations, and perform praises and prostrations. In order to make the efforts here meaningful. From the city of immortality, full of a hundred joys, The supreme white lotus of the mind of enlightenment, A vessel holding the lineage of the Shakya clan, A magical goddess with eyes like a deer. Like a thousand rays of light rising on the eastern mountain, The womb-lotus blooming in the Lumbini grove, Adorned by the service of Brahma and Indra, I prostrate to the one prophesied to be of the Bodhi lineage. Among the proud Shakya youths, Skilled in the entertainment of sixty-four arts, Praised and renowned by all, The consciousness of beings perfected in eye and ear. As if not bound by the noose of desire, To please his father, regarding the illusion of consorts, Viewing with the perspective of illusion, protecting the royal palace, I prostrate to the one who accomplished all meaning. The throne of kingship, so easily swayed and destroyed, Though there is none who is not controlled by the iron hook, The four causes of renunciation stole your heart, And you manifested as a naturally arisen monk. With the wave of diligence, unceasingly in the Nairanjana River, The strength of heart to endure the suffering of asceticism, And the samadhi that holds the subduing of all thoughts, Delighting the Sugatas of the ten directions.

I prostrate to the ground! All the wisdom of the countless three times, Bound by the two accumulations with skillful means, Therefore, under the Bodhi tree, having terrified all the demons, Manifestly attaining complete enlightenment is the nature of all Buddhas. In the bottomless abyss of samsara, The beings who run are ferried by the boats of the three vehicles, Having liberated them, you lead them to liberation and omniscience, You are the one who opens the treasure, I prostrate to you! The wine of speculation that is not discipline, Having drunk it, the tongues of the extremely intoxicated heretic teachers, The magical arts of hearing the Dharma are all completely cut off, Therefore, the rituals of shame and loss of glory are completed. You have attained the supreme of the four miraculous feet, Although you do not experience the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, However, in order to make others' minds weary, You show the passing into nirvana, I prostrate to you! For beings whose roots of virtue have become weak, In order to increase the merchandise of white Dharma, Like placing them in the inexhaustible eight parts of relics, Like sleeping in the realm of Dharma. May I also perfect the three: completion, maturation, and purification, In the great bliss pure land beyond the three realms, Manifestly attain enlightenment, with the twelve deeds. May I be the same as you, the omniscient one, in benefiting beings! After these and so on, the sthavira encouraged listening to the praise of the sutra. In Sanskrit: Śrīlasaṃyuktasūtra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of Proper Conduct. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. Together with a great community of monks, thirteen hundred and fifty monks. At that time, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, auspiciousness diminishes, life is cut short, the activities of life are abandoned, and the Teacher's doctrine will surely perish. Why do you not strive with diligence and steadfastness? The human body is extremely difficult to obtain. Having obtained it, and having also obtained the Victorious One's doctrine, which is difficult to obtain, why are you deceived by those who are incompatible with the meaning of liberation, and suffer? Monks, it is easy to die and be separated from life, but it is difficult to have morality impaired and destroyed.

It is not like that. Why? Because being separated from life and dying will end the life of this very life. If the discipline is broken and destroyed, one will be separated from lineage for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, abandoning happiness and experiencing great falls. Therefore, the Teacher praised the discipline. Those who have discipline will meet the Buddhas. Those who have discipline are the best of all ornaments. Those who have discipline are fragrance and perfume. Those who have discipline are the place of all joys. Discipline is the cool water that removes suffering. Those who have discipline are praised by all the world. With pure discipline, one attains the supreme state. Just as even a venomous snake, a great black naga, does no harm to those who have discipline, what need is there to mention others? A monk who has discipline has light. Those who have discipline become famous and attain happiness. Just as one cannot see forms without eyes, so too, one cannot see the Dharma without discipline. Just as one cannot walk the path without feet, so too, one cannot be liberated without discipline. Just as a good vase is a container for jewels, so too, discipline is the basis for generating all Dharmas. Just as a broken vase is not suitable as a container for jewels, so too, when discipline is broken, all Dharmas are lost. Those who initially have no discipline, do they think they will later attain nirvana? Whatever has no nose or a snub nose, etc., for them, mirrors are not needed. Even if the ear has not heard and the eye has not seen, that person who protects the teachings will go to the heavens. Much hearing, possessing much hearing, protecting much hearing, is indeed heaven. How can one associate with women? How can one delight in the royal palace? How can there be essence in a bubble? For women, there is nothing permissible. For royal power, there is nothing to delight in. For bubbles, there is no essence. For enjoyments, there is nothing permanent. Enjoyments are like flowing water. Whatever the boat, so is the home. Whatever the flower, so is the form. Life is like a bubble in water. After the Bhagavan had spoken thus, the monks, including the close attendants, rejoiced and praised what the Bhagavan had said. All the dedication of the Buddhas who have gone to the three times shall be dedicated with whatever dedication there is. Then there is the general confession, and the question of seeing the vows.
