The direction of the earth is black. The bi-monthly Uposatha is on the fourteenth. Thus it is said. The second is the twelve days of the waxing moon, and the six days of the waning moon from the Pleiades month (Tibetan 10th month) to the Virgo month (Tibetan 8th month), totaling eighteen. Among them, the statement that one should follow the king when postponing refers to considering that there will be skilled astrologers around him. Why is it said so? Because one should know that the constellations follow the astrologer. This is known through this. The third is to eliminate the ten improper things established by the Bhikshu Mahadeva, and to act during auspicious times such as consecration, hence it is called that. The fourth is to avert sudden declines such as diseases and epidemics in the world, or to do things so that they do not happen again. The fifth is the Uposatha performed to gather the Sangha. Thus, these three irregular Uposathas only have the difference of stating their respective times in the path of supplication. Here, for the two regular Uposathas, if a large boundary is drawn, then it is there; if both large and small are drawn, then starting from the small boundary, extending into the large boundary, etc., according to practice; and the performers are the five classes of ordained people. Among them, from the time of the previous Uposatha until today, examine whether there has been any transgression in one's own mindstream, and if there has been, then one should follow the order of confession, restraint, and blessing. After that, regarding the material for the Ghaṇṭā (bell) for gathering the Sangha, the Sutra says: Sandalwood, wood apple, palasha. Aśvattha (梵文天城体:अश्वत्थ,梵文罗马拟音:aśvattha, meaning: Ficus religiosa) and red sandalwood. རྒྱ་སྟར་ཏཱ་ལུ་(Tibetan, Devanagari: , Romanization: , Literal meaning: ). ཀིམ་ཤུ་ཀ (Tibetan, Devanagari: , Romanization: , Literal meaning: ). ཤིཾ་ཤ་བ་(Tibetan, Devanagari: , Romanization: , Literal meaning: ) and ཏ་མཱ་ལ(Tibetan, Devanagari: , Romanization: , Literal meaning: ). (Tibetan, Devanagari: , Romanization: , Literal meaning: ). If all these are not available, then one should strive to make it with mistletoe. It also says that the size is, from the mouth to the length of the finger joints, it should be eighty-four finger joints. The width is six fingers, and the height is also two fingers. With the size of the finger joints, the size of the four corners is two fingers. Make it well and evenly, very clear. Like a head with two ends shaved off. Then, the mallet for striking should also be cut from the same wood. The length is twelve finger joints, round, with two ends like a mongoose's head. The holding size is also the same. Thus it is said. To that, the Dharmakaya is free from the three: birth, cessation, and abiding, so it is originally unborn and virtuous. Therefore,

At the place, place it on the top of the monastery or on the upper floor of the gatehouse. The striker, whether it is one of the five kinds of ordained people, or a layperson who abides in the Uposatha, should first prostrate to the Three Jewels and then take it. The way of striking, although it can be written as "Shangtsa," the Sanskrit pronunciation is "Shadza," with three "ཤད" added before it. For the sake of gathering the Sangha, strike it three times, and add three loud "ཏོག་" at the end. For the sake of gathering to perform Uposatha and other activities and to listen to the Dharma, strike it once, add three "ཏོག་," or strike it three times, add two "ཏོག་." For the sake of removing impurity, do not add "ཏོག་," making it empty. For the sake of preventing harm, it is not certain. In each strike, either strike thirty-five times, or thirty-six times. Among the two methods, from the first strike to the eighteenth strike, gradually increase the force, and from the nineteenth strike to the complete end, gradually decrease the force. Thus, when the material of the Ghaṇṭā and the cause of striking are both complete, it has great benefits. As the Ghaṇṭā Sutra says: "The Mother Prajñāpāramitā abides in the form of the Ghaṇṭā." It also says: "Wherever the king is, if the sound of the Ghaṇṭā resounds, there will be auspiciousness and fame, desires and good harvests." And so on. It also says: "Those who hear it in the four seasons will attain Bodhi. Whoever sincerely rejoices will be liberated without doubt." And so on. If the material and the way of striking are not in accordance with the Dharma, it will cause harm to the place, disharmony among the Sangha, and it will become unrestrained. These faults are also mentioned in that Sutra. After that, the Sangha gathers, remembering whether they have committed any offenses. If there is doubt, then bless with "Namo." The way to purify sins is not to utter from the throat, but to squat, praying to entrust the offenses to the blessing. Then confess, saying: "Venerable ones, please listen. Today is the fourteenth Uposatha of the Sangha, or the fifteenth Uposatha. I, Bhikshu named so-and-so, am also the fourteenth Uposatha, or the fifteenth Uposatha. I, Bhikshu named so-and-so, remember committing such and such offenses in the Sangha." Or, if there is doubt, then say "The offenses are such and such."
