There are two types: the completely pure without regression is the precept of complete purity without transgression; the completely pure that restores transgressions is the precept of complete purity of restoration. And so on, there are extensive classifications. Therefore, one should understand that the corrected precept arises from the actions of body and speech, and the uncorrected precept is different from the realm known by the mind. If one does not fully comprehend all the antidotes that hold precepts and asceticism as supreme, the precepts will not become pure. Why is that? It is ridiculous to presume to guard what one does not know. Merely knowing transgressions makes restoration rituals easy. The first of the four doors through which transgressions arise is "not knowing," as asserted by Asanga. The basis of the precepts to be practiced is the ritual of the three matters, and the seventeen precepts are the precepts of entering. Among these, the actions of body and speech that the Tathagata permits are the precepts of entering, and not doing what is prohibited is the precept of abstaining. Therefore, if one does not understand such entering and abstaining, there is no way to not understand the precepts of the Vinaya. Even if there is one instance of not guarding properly, the naturally negative actions will become an aid to generating the mind of discipline. Just as the teacher Asanga believes that not knowing is the cause of the fundamental transgressions, it is the same for naturally negative actions. Therefore, if we should also explain the causes of abandoning the vows and the method of restoration, then, in general, there are four causes for abandoning the precepts: in the presence of someone who understands, one abandons the precepts from the depths of one's heart, or even if one does not abandon them, but a thought arises that contradicts the correct acceptance, thinking it is difficult to practice celibacy, one also abandons them by stating the reason for abandoning. The scriptures say, "Without abandoning the precepts, without destroying the precepts." That is the meaning. Similarly, losing the basis, that is, the colored faculties of consciousness cease and one dies and transmigrates, one also abandons them; the basis is damaged, that is, two genders appear simultaneously, or it changes three times, one also abandons them; losing the foundation, that is, one generates a wrong view that there is no cause and effect, one also abandons them. The last is because the root of virtue is severed, so it is the basis of the vows.

Because there is no (discipline), it is said to be the cause of abandoning all vehicles, both great and small, so it is very heavy. On top of the four, adding the cause of abandoning the night of the lay vows that has passed is the custom of the Treasury School. As it says, "Abandoning the training, death, the arising of two roots, cutting off the root, and departing from the root," if we distinguish it specifically, if one who is not yet twenty years old thinks that he is full and takes ordination, if he knows that it is so in that year, it is permissible to make up for it by abortion. Even if he makes up for it, if he breaks the precepts, then his vows will be broken. The sutra says: If you know, it will be broken. If he is born before he is full, he dwells in the womb, and includes the month of abortion. Also, the vows of a female monastic are abandoned because she promises to engage in desire. It is said: When one promises another to engage in desire, the training will be confused. So it is said. If we consider each school separately, the Red Robe school abandons because the sacred Dharma of the Vinaya has disappeared, because there is no establishment of the boundaries of the training. This is what they think. The Sutra School abandons because it has committed the act of concealing root downfalls, because the continuum is defiled by great shamelessness and impudence. This is what they think. The Kashmir Vaibhashikas do not abandon their vows even if they have committed the act of concealing root downfalls, because it is unreasonable to abandon all vows because only one side has been broken. Such a person is both a vow-holder and a violator of vows, just as some people have both wealth and debt. This is what they think. The reason for this is that the Kashmiris think that what has happened is like debt and wealth, both. Because the basis, intention, action, ultimate result, object, and collection of all downfalls are different. When the vows first arise, when one to seven vow-substances actually arise, the four elements that are equal in number also arise as the material cause. The cooperative condition is the acting cause of the preceptor and so on, and in the manner of the cause that arises simultaneously with the same share, the actual result of the form that can be distinguished arises, just as a dragon has seven incarnate heads, arising and abiding, so it is thought that if one is cut off, the other six also abide in their own place, and in the commentary on the Pratimoksha it is also said: Just as taking one side does not become taking everything. Similarly, one side
