It is a great pity that those who are not diligent do not care that the beginning of going from bad to worse starts from the next life onwards. Those who know such faults and can use their knowledge should not be dominated by perfection, afflictions, and inverted actions, but should always and in every way rely on and become accustomed to the path of the six perfections, such as generosity. The Ornament of the Sutras says: "The perfection of enjoyment and body, the perfection of retinue is excellence, always not going to the tune of afflictions, and not being inverted in actions." Therefore, for the sake of others, three things are needed: generosity, discipline, and patience. For one's own sake, three things are needed: wisdom, meditation, and diligence. Among them, generosity accomplishes temporary benefit, and discipline prevents harm to others from the root, so it is more beneficial. Moreover, if one cannot tolerate harm from others, one will make discipline flawed, so for scolding etc. from others, one needs to protect one's mind with the four Dharma of a renunciate, and needs patience as if nothing happened, so these three are mainly for the benefit of others. For one's own benefit, one must rely on the perfection of wisdom to attain the wisdom of liberation, and its opponent is mental wandering, so one must rely on the perfection of meditation to attain a workable object of focus. Obtaining it in this way is not possible for the lazy, so one must exert diligence day and night without delay. It is said: "Extremely diligent for the sake of sentient beings, acting with generosity, non-harm, and patience, with the basis of abiding and liberation, all self-benefit is practiced." Its meaning is that non-harm is discipline, focus is meditation, liberation is wisdom, and having the basis is diligence. By accomplishing all other-benefit with the first three, the latter three naturally accomplish all self-benefit. The Ornament of the Sutras says: "Not being deficient and completely non-harming, enduring harm and not being tired of affairs, bringing joy and speaking well, therefore the benefit of others is one's own benefit." That is also diligence.

By experiencing meditation on the basis of quiescence, one attains quiescence, and from that quiescence, the wisdom of individual analysis arises as insight, thereby attaining the wisdom of liberation. After that, for the sake of others, the nature of the perfection of generosity is first taught. The essence of generosity is non-attachment. There are three divisions: Dharma giving, material giving, and fearlessness giving. Material giving also has three aspects: giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Giving refers to giving food, clothing, vehicles, elephants, and lands to others. Great giving refers to giving sons and daughters, and family. Extreme giving refers to what is difficult to do, giving head and limbs. Therefore, the essence of generosity is being free from attachment, it is the antidote to attachment to enjoyment. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Grounds: "What is the essence of generosity? It is the mind that arises together with the non-attachment of the Bodhisattva, not looking at all possessions and one's own body, and the actions of body and speech that completely give away the objects to be given, taken up by that mind." That is to say, all the actions of body and speech that are taken up by the virtuous mind of giving. There are three divisions: Dharma, material, and fearlessness. Among them, from the perspective of the most important necessity, the Dharma giving in land examination is first mentioned, but from the perspective of the most important function, here the material giving and fearlessness giving are combined. Among them, the first is, it is not necessary to have abundant objects to give, but to give everything one owns to sentient beings, even if one has only a little left, one thinks that it belongs to sentient beings, and on top of that, one still accepts the mind of giving from many aspects, for example, if this great earth becomes food and drink, I will be able to eliminate the poverty of all the poor, such as pretas, like this, by expanding the vast mind of giving that pacifies the suffering of others, like a snake shedding its skin, one needs to destroy the clinging of miserliness. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The generosity of the Bodhisattva is non-attachment, non-clinging, without attachment. Attachment itself is not, non-attachment, non-clinging, without attachment." In the past, there was one who competed with the food giving of the lordless protector.
