Because one is not arrogant towards rivals, having abandoned all distractions and going forth, it is prophesied to be superior to the giving of food. Moreover, those who have wealth should give even more. Initially, starting with giving a little food and drink, gradually increasing the power of wisdom, one should also learn to give clothes, dwellings, utensils, vehicles, mounts, elephants, and even countries, as stated in the Jataka tales. In the past, the king of Kosala, by giving a single portion of warm gruel to four ascetics, obtained kingship as a result. When a merchant is not overwhelmed, and a beggar asks, he cannot say he has nothing. Even if others steal from his own home, he should cultivate special joy in that. When that person becomes poor, he should give alms from the price of cutting and selling grass. One should learn from examples such as the deceased king building a permanent offering house and giving. The sutra says: Through the giving of material things, the accumulation of merit is perfected, and through the giving of Dharma, the accumulation of wisdom is perfected. These two should be accomplished in every way. What is the giving of material things? It is like this: giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Giving is giving food, clothing, elephants, and other things to others. So it is said. The field of giving, the field of good qualities, is good, but one should not think that those with afflictions are the opposite of this, because this hinders the realization of the equality of Dharma. In particular, giving with compassion to an inferior field is the way of the Great Vehicle. As the sutra says: Have an equal and impartial mind towards all sentient beings, without discrimination. If one thinks that the Three Jewels are my field of merit, but animals and so on are not, then that Bodhisattva will not realize the equality of Dharma. Therefore, the Three Jewels and the Lama are good fields for giving, but animals and so on are not, like sowing seeds in a salty field. If one thinks like this, it will not become the Dharma of a Bodhisattva. So it is said. However, the field of giving to be chosen is one with dull faculties, a beginner, one who has not trained the mind, one who does not have

One should contemplate and familiarize oneself with these. As asked by the wise Zengzhang, it is said: There are five kinds of unsurpassed generosity, namely the Tathagata, the Sangha, the Dharma speaker, the sick, and parents. Furthermore, as it says in the "Noble Liberation Sutra": Even if not a noble parent, the sick and the Dharma speaker, even the Bodhisattva of the last birth, the merit of offering is immeasurable. Thus, even if the object of generosity is small, if there is no expectation of ripening results, it becomes a supreme field of merit. If the object is large, but mixed with the greed of the five desires, the result is uncertain. As it says in the "Earth Store Ten Wheels Sutra": For the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, not for the sake of seeking ripening results, even if the object of generosity is small, it becomes a true field of merit. Although the object of generosity is large, but dwelling in the five kinds of greed, not sealed with the seal of the noble ones, it turns into an uncertain gathering. Thus. The sutra says that great generosity refers to giving away children and property. Like the king of all giving, competing with jealous kings, although there is no matter that is of definite benefit to oneself, due to the evil heart of greed and deception, begging for the children and property of the king of all giving, causing them to have great attachment to their children, feeling pain like a broken heart, but their heart of generosity does not turn back, giving with a heart of no regret. One should repeatedly contemplate this courage and benefit, feel great shame for one's own stingy behavior, and make a vow to strive to familiarize oneself with it. As it says in the "Compendium of Perfections": Remembering the supreme conduct of the Buddhas, thinking about following one's own vows, in order to eliminate all attachments, one should cultivate these supreme minds. Thus. The most difficult thing is to give away the head and limbs. The sutra says: The most difficult generosity refers to giving away the head, eyes, hands, feet, etc. Thus. Our teacher Shakyamuni.
