Again and again, one should train to increase the power of destroying greed and attachment towards vegetables and the like. For those who initially have a strong bond of stinginess, just as a householder with many obstacles was once made to hold a small, inferior object of generosity in one hand and then taught to give with the other, eventually becoming capable of giving generously, so too should we first accustom ourselves to the thought of giving away small things like vegetables, so that later the power of our minds will increase more and more. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "The Guide also initially practiced giving vegetables and the like. Having become accustomed to this, one gradually gives away one's own flesh. When one has the thought towards one's own body as if it were vegetables, what difficulty is there in giving away flesh at that time?" It also says: "There is nothing that does not become easy through practice." Therefore, when a Bodhisattva is in the stage of learning the path, he should ascend to the top of the stage of giving, and just as he greets beggars from afar with his eyes and cultivates joy, he should regard the object of giving as: 'This is the virtuous friend who perfects my perfection of giving,' and think that this object and I will inevitably be separated, it will abandon me, and I will abandon it, and if I give it away now, I will not suffer from regret in the future, and because there is no attachment, my mind will be happy. In this way, one should learn the method of destroying greed and attachment through giving. As it says in the Sutra Ornament: "One who gives away all benefits, whose root relies on the mind, whose body and enjoyment are complete, who holds and accomplishes both, who is also without stinginess, who gives Dharma and fearlessness, and who knows mixed giving in this way, the wise should practice correctly." The giving of fearlessness is: The giving of fearlessness lies in protecting the lives of others and liberating them from fearful situations, as a chance to catch their breath. The nature of the giving of fearlessness is: To give a chance to catch their breath to those who are afraid and panic-stricken due to fear. For example, being trapped in the king's prison, suffering from the torment of punishment, as well as robbers, wild animals, dangerous roads, etc.

Being afflicted by hail, pursued by hunters, and tormented by diseases and demons, etc., especially in the realm of samsara, there is no one who does not protect their own life, except for the beings in hell. Therefore, to be the companion and protector of those beings is the supreme conduct of the Bodhisattvas. Our teacher, when the human lord became a sacrificial master, because his territory followed wrong views, he considered performing a grand life sacrifice for the sake of rain. At that time, that king, being dominated by great compassion, felt very uneasy and tried to find a way, saying: Like this, the fields have been ruined by drought, the grass and trees of Jambudvipa have withered, and the rivers have also dried up. For the sake of rain, other sacrifices are weak. Select a hundred deluded people from your own territory and prepare for the life sacrifice! Thus he commanded the ministers. They were all frightened and panicked, and like listening to admonitions, they requested to stop the life sacrifice, actually giving many beings the refuge of fearlessness. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should diligently learn to give, be skilled in means, and use their own flesh and blood as servants, giving others the place of fearlessness. When learning in this way, if one is unable to do so, then rashly performing rituals, this false giving will also be condemned. In a state where compassion is extremely impure, giving away the body and life is forbidden in the Compendium of Trainings. Among them, great giving and extreme giving are the realm of those who have attained forbearance of the unborn dharma. As it is said in the Holy Near-Circle Question Sutra: Abiding in the forbearance of the unborn dharma, one should also practice giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Therefore, now that faith has not yet become strength, the mind of a beginner is as fragile as the scab of a wound, difficult to endure, and those who are very unstable in advancing and retreating, if they directly engage in the great altruistic cause before healing their own disease of afflictions, I am afraid that they will become tired of altruism and give rise to the mind of a Shravaka or Pratyekabuddha.
