It is like a ship capsizing in the ocean, and one cannot bear to stay on land, but exhausts oneself by swimming, only to end up in distress. Therefore, even if one has given away one's body in thought, one should not actually give away flesh and blood, as explained in detail in the Compendium of Trainings. The source for this is also in the Sutra of the Noble Akashagarbha, which says, "Desiring at the wrong time is the work of demons." And in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says, "Without a pure mind of compassion, one should not give away the body, but strive to make this and other bodies the cause for accomplishing great benefit." It is like that. Similarly, giving without considering whether the recipient needs it is also a bad action. Abandoning attachment to one's own possessions is considered the true measure of generosity. As it says in the Great Ascetic's Extensive Questions, "Whoever has wealth is the giver. Causing others to give is the act of giving, but not the true giver. Giving poison, weapons, or killing living beings, and giving alcohol to the reckless, is impure. Doubting the ripening of karma, and regretting after giving, is also impure. Thinking that one will enjoy the ripening of merit oneself and not share it with others is also impure. Not rejoicing in the Buddha at the time of sickness or death, or giving through servants without faith, is also impure. Abandoning the poor and giving to the rich is also impure. Great ascetics, the ripening of these actions is like planting seeds in a salty field, which, although not without growth, will not bear fruit. Great ascetics, it is like planting seeds in an unplowed and unweeded field, which, even if rain falls, may sprout, but will not flower or bear fruit." Thus it was taught. Therefore, in general, the measure of perfecting the paramita of generosity is not to completely eliminate the poverty of others with the object of giving, but to abandon the attachment of stinginess and miserliness towards one's own body, possessions, and all roots of virtue from the depths of one's heart. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says, "All possessions, together with their fruits, with the mind of giving to all beings, is said to be the paramita of generosity, therefore, the mind is the key." If it is not like that, then sentient beings act according to their own karma.

Who can completely eliminate stinginess? Even though the Buddhas of the past practiced the perfection of generosity, there are still countless beings with impoverished bodies, such as pretas. As it is said in the previous text: If giving were to make beings free from poverty, but there are still poor beings, then how does salvation reach the other shore? In general, even if one cannot actually give away one's body and life, becoming accustomed to mental giving is like a seed that produces fruit. Because of becoming accustomed to focusing, one will become like that, just as the old woman of Magadha meditated on becoming a tiger and was able to block the road. Therefore, considering that the power of the mind will manifest in this life or in future lives, the Compendium of Trainings says that with regard to food, clothing, and shelter given to sentient beings from the depths of one's heart, one should forget the thought, "This is mine," and instead think that one should use them for the benefit of others. If one enjoys them out of attachment to one's own benefit, it is a downfall with afflictions. Even if there is no attachment, but if one does not grasp that point and enjoys them with attachment for the sake of others, it is a downfall without afflictions. If one dedicates something to others and also considers it to be the property of others, but uses it for oneself, it becomes taking what is not given. If the value is sufficient, it will become a defeat for those who hold the vows of individual liberation. That is what is said. Even so, in the noble land of India, there were those who criticized the works of this teacher. However, the great scholar Kṛṣṇapa said: The teacher is one who has attained accomplishment, and it is not appropriate to doubt whether the words of those who have realized the truth are necessary, etc., because the teacher is one who has attained the accomplishment of being worthy of prostration. Therefore, saying that those necessities, etc., are merely excuses for fools. If one thinks that the words of those who have realized the truth are unnecessary, one cannot measure them. As Chandrakirti said: Those who have heard little and are filled with pride, Those who speak much without a root, Those who are unable to follow and uphold, Are called "sandalwood" people. Therefore, those who do not have faith in the Bodhisattva, who have not separated from the net of doubt, and who do not respect the instructions of the teacher, but who want to understand, should comprehend this.
