Wherever one resides, the qualities of auspiciousness are complete because the minds of the local deities and others have become gentle. Even if one does not directly teach the Dharma, reciting profound Dharma words and meanings, and even actions like sprinkling water, have the merit of Dharma giving, which makes their minds gentle and joyful. Therefore, one should aim to benefit all sentient beings, eliminate karma and afflictions, and with a mind of Bodhicitta, recite profound scriptures and focus on Dharma giving. Actually giving pens, ink, books, and other items, as well as teaching crafts and other worldly skills that are faultless and beneficial to the Dharma and sentient beings, should also be taught. Even telling stories, words that incline people towards the Dharma, and even slightly discussing topics related to good and evil, cause and effect, and other Dharma topics, can be of great benefit to others in this degenerate age. Therefore, liberating oneself from samsara and benefiting others with the Dharma is the main purpose of giving, because material gifts only temporarily alleviate suffering. Therefore, according to the capacity of the disciples, teaching the common treasury of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Vidyadharas is the intermediate level of giving. That is, the discipline of guarding with mindfulness, the patience of believing in the Dharma of omniscience and enduring the scolding of others, the diligence of desiring progress, the Samadhi of dedicating the merit of the mind that is not mixed with the Hinayana to complete enlightenment, and the wisdom of knowing the emptiness of Dharmata, these six Paramitas are explained in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses. For those with supreme intelligence, placing them in the Dharma that is inconceivable like the sky is clearly shown by the scripture just quoted. Householder Bodhisattvas mainly engage in material and fearlessness giving, while ordained Bodhisattvas should engage in Dharma giving, as stated in the Pratimoksha of the Bodhisattvas: Shariputra, if a householder Bodhisattva fills Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with the seven precious jewels.

Compared to offering to the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly complete Buddhas, if Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who has become a renunciate, were to teach a four-line verse, this would generate even greater merit. Shariputra, the Tathagata does not allow renunciates to engage in contaminated giving. Thus it is said. The meaning of this is that contaminated things are mostly related to householders and are easy to arise. Therefore, it is to prevent renunciates from seeking and accumulating wealth with damaged discipline and then giving alms, without considering the faults. Otherwise, it is not that the benefit of giving is prohibited by naturally obtaining wealth through the power of past giving, but rather that giving has not been spoken of. For example, the protector Nagarjuna provided livelihood for many monks, and the teacher Hero, through the power of past merit, obtained a large amount of alms every day, thus benefiting all the monks. For the great wisdom Bodhisattvas on the side of householders, there is also no prohibition of Dharma giving. In the house of the Licchavi known as Immaculate, there are eight wonderful places, as well as the six perfections, and extensive and profound words about the irreversible wheel of Dharma. Thus, all the perfections of giving must be endowed with six sacred qualities, which is the meaning stated in the Compendium of Perfections: Relying on the mind of enlightenment is the sacred basis, and whatever difference giving involves, whether general or specific, not abandoning its intention is the sacred object, giving for the immediate happiness and long-term benefit of all sentient beings is the sacred purpose, being seized by non-discriminating wisdom is the sacred skillful means, being seized by the sacred dedication of dedicating the virtue of giving to perfect enlightenment, and being seized by the sacred purity of eliminating the two obscurations of afflictions and knowledge. For non-sacred thoughts, they must be cleansed, such as the evil view that giving has no fruit, and the thought that harm can also become Dharma, thereby harming the lives of beings, and mental transactions that confuse directions with deception, etc.
