To give with things that have been exhausted by the burden of traveling long distances in other directions is the same as the tenets of barbarians who claim violence as dharma. Furthermore, giving associated with auspiciousness and good fortune, or giving with an arrogant mind, or giving for the sake of competing with others, or giving while despising the beggar, or giving with the prideful thought that "I am generous, but others are not," or thinking that merely completing the giving will transform one into detachment from the worldly and transmundane, and so on. In short, all thirty-six impure givings that are spoken of are frightening because of the burden of words. Assuming that one has a little generosity and is endowed with discipline, one denigrates others' stinginess and loose conduct. This also represents the remaining situations, that is, the situation of going to hell by causing anger in others. In the Sutra of the Purification of Karmic Obscurations, it also says: When ordinary people give, they do not trust the stingy, and that person also becomes angry and falls into hell, which is an obstacle to giving. When guarding discipline, if one speaks unpleasant words, many people will not trust, and that lack of trust will lead to falling into the lower realms. Abiding in patience and so on, but not praising those who abide in the opposite of these, this is an obstacle to discipline and so on. Therefore, the Protector Nagarjuna said: Even though I have perfect wealth, I should not despise others, but with a mind like melted butter, I should hide all qualities within. These words should also be understood. Furthermore, the giving of a Bodhisattva is to give to the beggar immediately upon obtaining enjoyment, because accumulating a lot and then giving at one time is not only a cause of arrogance and dependence on others, but during that time, due to various afflictions such as greed, and the discrimination of guarding and increasing, it will hinder many virtuous deeds, and sometimes the act of giving will not be completed due to loss in the middle. In short, not giving quickly and counting favors, etc., are not givings that make others feel annoyed.

The benefits of giving are: In the chapter of the Truthful One, it says that giving with respect will cause relatives and others to treat one with respect; giving with one's own hands will result in receiving respect; giving at the right time will cause all matters to be accomplished at the right time; giving without harming others will result in obtaining stable possessions; giving while enduring discomfort will cause one's retinue to be close. Furthermore, in order to eliminate the faults of those who are stained with miserliness, one should use skillful and gentle speech, and also give some material possessions, thereby encouraging them to give. For those who have no resources, give them the means to give, and allow them to make offerings to the Three Jewels. If one has no possessions oneself, one should engage in blameless crafts and various occupations that one has diligently worked at, accumulate wealth, and thereby engage in the work of giving. One should not do anything that hinders others from giving, nor should one retract items that have been designated for giving. Furthermore, one should understand how to examine from the perspective of what is permissible and not permissible to give. Whatever the object may be, if it immediately separates from the cause of bad migrations and generates a feeling of happiness, and ultimately leads to abandoning evil and accomplishing virtue; or if it does not immediately lead to happiness but is ultimately a cause of benefit, a Bodhisattva should give it. Whatever is given that immediately generates happiness but ultimately causes harm, or that generates suffering both immediately and ultimately, should not be given. For example, the first case refers to a Bodhisattva giving away livestock and other animals that he owns to others, leading to their being slaughtered or tormented. Furthermore, if one becomes like a king, one should not steal the children and wives of others to give away; one should not take possessions from one's parents, the Sangha, the property of the Three Jewels, servants, and other resources to give to others; one should not give in ways that harm others; one should not give items that are unsuitable for those who uphold vows; one should not give leftover food and drink, and so on. Similarly, even if one is motivated by compassion and the time comes to give away one's body and life, one should not give away something as important as a limb for the sake of trivial needs; even if one's own courage to give is complete, but from the perspective of the recipient,
