It is greatly necessary not to abandon the body itself for accomplishing the benefit of many sentient beings, and one should not give to gods of the demon class, or to violent sentient beings possessed by them who demand with arrogance, or to madmen and those with disturbed minds who torment because their senses do not remain in a normal state. If one gives to them, it is said that one will fall. Similarly, one should not give sons, wives, servants, etc., to those who are not friendly, or to yakshas and rakshasas, or in short, to those who oppress with violent force, to those who are ungrateful, or to those who forget their vows. One should not give unsuitable food and drink to those who are ill. One should not give to heretics who seek quarrels, or who, even if they do not respect the Dharma, ask for scriptures because they regard them as wealth. One should not give to others the image and meaning of scriptures that are disguised as the Dharma. One should not give land to hunters, one should not give rivers to fishermen, one should not give adversaries to enemies, and one should not give the three robes to bodhisattvas who are not superior to ordained ones. These are all impermissible. For these, one should not say in harsh words, "I will not give this to you," but rather, with skillful means of communication, if the person is understanding, one should say, "Do not misunderstand that I am not giving this to you because I am greedy for this beautiful face. Like this, renunciants hold robes and so on after examining them with their preceptors and teachers and dedicating them. The possessions of bodhisattvas are dedicated and offered to the Buddhas and their heirs, and are held as if entrusted to oneself. Therefore, taking and giving away another's property without permission is a great fault for both of us." Having made him understand in this way, one should give from other wealth and possessions without thwarting his intention. In general, one should also dedicate one's own possessions from the depths of one's heart and hold them in the manner of entrusting them, so that one may generate great merit. Furthermore, for those who are worthy of giving, one should think that just as I have dedicated and given to the Buddhas and their heirs, they have nothing that they do not give to sentient beings, and in this way one may give. This is distinguished by the difference in the intention of permission and prohibition. In this way, if it is not because one understands the necessity, but because one's own mind is overwhelmed by stinginess.

Therefore, because of relying on Dharma talks, one might be deceived by others' falsehoods. To this, the courageous one said: I am still weak and my roots of virtue are not yet mature. As a beginner in the Great Vehicle, and being dominated by the mind of not giving up, and clinging to the views of acceptance and rejection, and to the self and what belongs to the self, please forgive me, noble one, and do not be saddened. I will do my best to fulfill the wishes of you and all sentient beings. If the other person still does not believe after saying this three times to the beggar, or is stingy and unwilling to give alms, doing this is helpful. As it is said in the Compendium of the Perfections: Even if a beggar actually comes, if one is truly too weak to give, one should try to not let the beggar feel frustrated. Soothe his mind with gentle words. In the future, when a beggar comes again, one should try not to let him become discouraged, eliminate the faults of stinginess, and strive to completely abandon greed. It is like this. Therefore, stinginess and greed are obstacles to giving. Thinking: I have not been accustomed to giving in the past, so I am still stingy now. Because of this reason, in the future I will not like giving, and will become poor, which is inevitable. Therefore, one should not be dominated by it in any way. If one is poor, this is also because one did not help others in past lives. Now one feels ashamed because of poverty, but the only cause for becoming wealthy in future lives is giving. Therefore, do not disappoint the beggar. If one becomes attached to the object to be given, thinking: If I did not cling to it in various ways, I would not perversely think that I cannot give it up; this thought is the cause of suffering. Therefore, one should sever the mind of attachment. If one does not see the benefit of the fruit of giving as the arising of Bodhi, but only sees the benefit of enjoyment, thinking: Alas! All conditioned phenomena are impermanent and subject to separation. Obtaining the fruit of giving once is like a merchant gaining profit, but although one gains profit, it is not merit, just like experiencing happiness in a dream. Therefore, one should transform the fruit of giving into the cause for attaining supreme Bodhi. In general, until one attains the first ground, enjoyment will not be exhausted.
