It is the supreme discipline of the Bodhisattva path, and is also widely proclaimed under the name "Pāramitā." In order to first explain its classification, the discipline of entering is the six perfections, the first five are the collection of supreme merit, the last one is the great collection of wisdom, without relying on the two, Buddhahood cannot be attained. Adding skillful means, power, aspiration, and wisdom makes ten. Thus, the six perfections are the Dharma for Bodhisattvas to accumulate virtue. Among them, for householders, it is patience, generosity, and discipline. As the noble Nāgārjuna said: "Generosity and discipline, the Dharma of patience, especially for householders, should always be practiced, possessing the essence of compassion." The discipline mentioned here refers to the lay vows, which means being separated from sins. For renunciants, in the precepts of the Compendium of Sutras, it is said: "The precepts of discipline, should be learned following the Buddha." Therefore, the main way to accumulate virtue is discipline and the precepts, as well as meditation and other remaining parts. As it is said in the "Samantabhadra's Conduct and Vows": "Diligently practice the Pāramitās, never forgetting the Bodhicitta." Just like this. In order to counter the obstacles to be abandoned, it is divided into ten, as it is said in the "Madhyāntavibhāga": "Generosity and discipline, patience and diligence, meditation and wisdom perfection, skillful means, power, aspiration, and wisdom, these are established as the ten perfections." That is, it is divided in order to counter the ten obstacles of stinginess, immoral discipline, anger, laziness, distraction, wrong wisdom, unskillful means, obstacles to power, unfulfilled aspirations, and the obscuration of knowledge. In terms of the six perfections, the first five, such as generosity, are the collection of merit, which is the cause of obtaining higher rebirth, and the latter is the unerring cause of definite goodness. However, it should not be mistaken that the two only directly experience their respective results. If the collection of merit is practiced with unskillful means and lack of wisdom, then its result will only become a large body and enjoyment in samsara, and a long life.

If one is skilled in means and endowed with profound wisdom, it is very suitable to become the cause of omniscience, therefore it is shown that means and wisdom must be combined. As it is said in the Ratnavali, "The form body, in brief, is born from the accumulation of merit." If one is to take the ten aspects into account, the first three of the remaining four are merit, and the latter is wisdom, which is definitely a good cause. Why is wisdom suitable as a cause? In the Manjushri Illusion Sutra, it is said, "Having merit is the accumulation of merit, wisdom is the great source of wisdom." This is clear. Therefore, what is to be accomplished by the Mahayana practitioners is that with the wisdom that realizes suchness, one does not abide in samsara, and with the means associated with great compassion, one does not abide in nirvana. The state of non-abiding nirvana must be accomplished through the two accumulations supported by the truths of conventional and ultimate reality, or through the means and wisdom. As it is said in the Secret Inconceivable Sutra, "With the accumulation of wisdom, all defilements will be abandoned. With the accumulation of merit, all sentient beings will be nourished. O Bhagavan, since this is the case, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom." Furthermore, in this way, through means such as generosity, one holds the abundant and complete results of great enjoyment, such as the form body, the pure land, and the retinue, therefore the Tathagatas do not abide even in complete nirvana. With pure wisdom, one has completely abandoned the root of samsara, which is the opposite, therefore one does not abide in samsara, and it is a path free from imputation and depreciation. Therefore, in the Arya Dharma Samgraha Sutra, it is also said, "The Tathagata is born of means and wisdom, and it should be known that it is also possible to place him in the realm of others." Because of this, from all the profound oral instruction meditation sequences, first, taking refuge, generating the mind of enlightenment, prostrations, the seven-branch offering, the mandala, the hundred-syllable mantra, the guru and deity yoga, etc., all show that one should practice the numbers based on hundreds of thousands, which is the part of means.
