Due to attachment to fame and reverence, accepting self-praise and disparaging others; to those who are suffering and without protectors, being stingy and not giving wealth, and not giving Dharma with compassion; even if others confess their faults, still not appeasing anger, but instead scolding them; abandoning the Great Vehicle, and proclaiming similar false Dharma. This means that due to particularly clinging to fame and reverence, one accepts self-praise and disparages others; seeing sentient beings who are suffering and without protectors, because of stinginess, one does not give wealth, nor does one give Dharma with compassion; even if others confess their faults, one still does not quell anger, but instead scolds them; one does not diligently revere the Great Vehicle, but instead fabricates what is not Dharma to proclaim it as such. Like Acharya Jangchub Zangpo and others, some consider these four to be the root downfalls, and the other eighteen to be additional, and this also exists, one should know that this is the difference between classification and summarization. Like this, if these four possess four branches, it is a great entanglement, which is to continuously engage in those misdeeds without interruption; regarding these misdeeds, one does not generate even a little shame or embarrassment; and one feels satisfied and happy with these misdeeds; one does not consider these misdeeds as faults, but instead views them as virtues, if one possesses these four branches, it is a great entanglement, because it destroys the vows, it is called a defeat. If one possesses any one branch, and feels ashamed of one's own actions, and generates a little embarrassment out of consideration for others, therefore one can be stopped by others, this is a medium entanglement. If one generates strong shame for any one branch, and without relying on other factors, one immediately stops oneself, this is a small entanglement, these two entanglements do not abandon the vows, this is said for those of medium and dull faculties, it is the view of the Bodhisattva Bhumi. Even so, in the Definitive Treatise, combining the two abandonments into one, and adding the arising of what is contrary to the vows, abandoning the causes, abandoning the precepts, and possessing the four dharmas of medium or higher entanglement, these are all said to be the four complete abandonments. And the difference between the Skillful Means Sutra and the Compendium of Trainings is distinguished according to the sharpness or dullness of the faculties. The method of confession is said in the Twenty Verses: One should take the vows again, medium transgressions should be confessed to three people, the rest should be confessed in front of one person, just like whether one's own mind is defiled by afflictions or not. Thus pray.

If one abandons it, or if one abandons the vows due to a root downfall of defeat by a great entanglement, if this happens, one must earnestly confess and accumulate purification, and one must take the vows again. It is said in the Bodhisattva stages that there is no opportunity to take them again more than three times. Among them, leakage is entanglement. If one practices with a medium entanglement, it is similar to defeat, or some say it is defeat, these must be confessed to three or more people. If one practices a root downfall with a small entanglement, and the forty-six subtle transgressions other than that, by distinguishing the motivation, whether or not it is caused by afflictions, some will become images of downfall, these must be confessed by stating the matter in front of one person. Regarding the time, the actual teaching of the Sutra Requested by the Noble Near Round has already been quoted. If one cannot find a suitable object of confession, one should confess with words and restrain with intention in front of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. In general, in order to not decline and be stable, one should always study the four ways of perception. The four ways of perception that protect from the perspective of stability: seeing the virtuous friend as a Buddha, seeing the Dharma taught by him as the path, seeing those who practice it as friends, and seeing all sentient beings as one's only child. These are the correct ways to study aspiration. As it says in the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra: 'Youth, possessing four perceptions, the mind of enlightenment will become stable. What are the four? From a true virtuous friend, the perception of a Buddha, the perception of the Dharma taught by him as the path, the perception of those who practice it as friends, and the perception of all sentient beings as the perception of one's only child.' Now is the discipline of the Bodhisattva's accumulation of virtuous Dharma, which is the entering study, proclaiming the vows that abide in the nature of the six perfections: Thus, the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, skillful means and wisdom, the four means of gathering, the Bodhisattva's vows of misconduct, the accumulation of virtuous Dharma, the three disciplines of benefiting sentient beings, etc., all of these are like putting all the grains into a large bag, the six perfections are able to gather them all, other methods of gathering cannot do this, so this is.
