Also, as it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: 'A monk urged his old father, saying, "Come quickly!" As a result, the father died, but this is not considered an action of immediate retribution.' It is also said: 'Therefore, merit and demerit reside in the root of intention.' Also, in the Four Hundred Verses: 'The intention of a Bodhisattva, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, all will turn into virtue, because the mind is the principal thing.' Also, from the Twenty Vows: 'Having compassion and love, there is no fault in a virtuous mind.' Therefore, what is prohibited in the Hinayana Vinaya, but allowed in the Mahayana, should be understood as considering the levels of intelligence and abilities of pure and impure beings. As it is said in the Praise of Speech: 'In terms of allowance and prohibition, your teachings are sometimes definite and sometimes indefinite, but there is no contradiction between them.' In this way, one should understand the direct and indirect, as well as the hidden meanings. Like a lotus that is not stained by mud, if it is intended for a Bodhisattva who abides in the world with the essence of emptiness and compassion, one should not be mistaken by the mere words out of fear of the asceticism of the vows. As it is said in the Mother Sutra: 'A great Bodhisattva who wishes to practice these profound Prajnaparamitas, in order to fully ripen sentient beings, sometimes shows the enjoyment of the five desirable qualities, but in reality, they are not being enjoyed.' Therefore, even so, for the Bodhisattva vows, abandoning difficult actions for one's own peace and not striving for the benefit of others are said to be the root of downfall. In any situation of allowance and prohibition, without measuring one's own intelligence and experience, without examining the rationality of what to adopt and abandon, acting rashly, or seeing a situation where action should be taken but preventing it by embracing a mind of ease, or seeing a situation where action should be prevented but abandoning it out of fear of undertaking the difficulties of a lower level, casually engaging in higher-level actions, or adopting an attitude of indifference towards both taking and preventing actions, all of these are the root causes of downfall. Like this, the four categories of downfall, the image of downfall, non-downfall, and the image of non-downfall should be explained properly.

If the three disciplines are combined, then for the Pratimoksha vows, killing with hatred is a downfall. Killing with the intention of benefiting is an image of downfall. Not killing with compassion is not a downfall. Benefiting others without killing is an image of no downfall. In accumulating merit and Dharma, being stingy and not giving is a downfall. Not giving with the intention of benefiting is an image of downfall. Giving with a pure intention is not a downfall. Giving to harm others is an image of no downfall. In benefiting sentient beings, not taking care of the sick is a downfall. Turning away from taking care of the sick in order to accomplish great things is an image of downfall. Taking care of the sick with love is not a downfall. Even though there is someone to take care of the sick, abandoning one's own great virtuous deeds to take care of the sick is an image of no downfall. Therefore, in all situations, one should understand all actions of body, speech, and mind in this way: For example, digging earth and cutting grass, which are not related to virtue, are meaningless misdeeds. If it is for the sake of virtue, then there is no downfall. Drawing lines on the ground without mindfulness is conducive (to downfall). Actions that are taken with mindfulness and awareness are to be learned. Remembering what has been learned, correcting oneself, protecting and repairing the vows, one should know the five characteristics. Therefore, the Bodhisattva's discipline also depends on abandoning desire, so first one must purify the Pratimoksha vows. For the initial practitioner Bodhisattvas, the mind is mainly focused on practicing from higher to higher. If the Pratimoksha vows are not pure at the beginning, there will be many obstacles if one mainly cultivates the other two. The ordained Bodhisattva is said to have special qualities in the Ornament of the Sutras. For ordinary beings, having recognized the faults and shortcomings of the afflictions of desire, they renounce the household and go forth from home to homelessness, abandoning the four types of agriculture. Having separated from external objects of desire, they purify the Pratimoksha vows on the basis of becoming a Bhikshu. Why? Because it is difficult for the initial practitioner to make the accumulation of virtue and the benefiting of sentient beings powerful as they are in the literal sense, so one must rely on antidotes from the subtle level, because this is the time to protect one's own afflictions. In the Ornament of the Pure Land of Manjushri, it is also said: Shariputra
