One should not teach the supreme Dharma to the inferior. One should teach to those who have become vessels for the vast Dharma. One should not mix inferior Dharma with them. Thus, and so on. Thus, in order to lead others onto the path by any means, one must also abide by it oneself. If one has not accomplished it oneself, even if one places others on the path of entering and leaving, they will not listen, because this is self-evident. Therefore, giving accomplishes temporary benefit, pleasing speech accomplishes the cause of correspondence, acting accomplishes holding the Dharma that ultimately benefits, and consistency of meaning causes others to follow oneself. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: Giving, equality, benefit, and guidance, and causing oneself to follow others, pleasing speech, acting, and consistency of meaning, are considered to be so. Thus, all that accomplishes benefit and happiness for sentient beings, directly or indirectly, through the four objects of gathering and being encompassed by the mind of enlightenment, is the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. However, in the Bodhisattva Grounds, the ways of benefiting others are summarized into twelve aspects, which will be explained below based on examples. Thus, the nature of the three disciplines of a Bodhisattva is as stated in the Heap of Jewels Sutra: "The discipline of restraint is to protect the mind from non-virtue. The discipline of gathering virtuous Dharmas is to manifestly accomplish the root of virtue. The discipline of benefiting sentient beings is to diligently benefit others." Thus, both the Pratimoksha and the Bodhisattva vows, internally, the Bodhisattva is superior to the Pratimoksha, with four differences: The Pratimoksha only prevents evil deeds based on harming others, while the Bodhisattva adds benefit on top of that. The Pratimoksha includes seven abandonments, mainly concerning body and speech, while the Bodhisattva includes all ten abandonments, mainly concerning mind. Among them, the precepts of the Pratimoksha are included as one aspect of the training for ordained individuals who hold the Bodhisattva vows, but for ordained individuals who are not Bodhisattvas, they are accomplished as superior Dharma by adding training. Thus, the Pratimoksha relies on the discipline of restraining one's own misdeeds, thereby avoiding evil deeds based on harming others. The Bo-

A Bodhisattva is one who, on top of not harming others, adds benefiting them, that is, abstaining from misdeeds, accumulating virtuous dharmas, and benefiting sentient beings, all three. Pratimoksha primarily concerns actions of body and speech, summarized by seven abstentions, while a Bodhisattva primarily concerns all ten abstentions with intention. From the Compendium of Perfections, it says: 'It becomes the path of bliss to higher realms and liberation; do not transgress these ten paths of action. By abiding in this, thinking of benefiting beings, the difference in intention will have results. Speech, body, and mind should be properly restrained; the Victorious Ones said that, in brief, this is discipline.' Thus, from knowing what is permitted and prohibited, the method of learning is: especially, the object of learning is that in Pratimoksha, one does not violate what is established for the sake of others. If a Bodhisattva acts for the sake of others, the seven non-virtues of body and speech, knowing that it is done for the sake of others or will be done, and not obstructing one's own accumulation of merit, but increasing it, these three situations are examined, and there is a time for permission. For example, the powerful black man with a short spear, the Brahmin boy Star, are examples where formal faults are actually virtuous. Because it is done with an intention that has the power of cause and effect. For the three of mind, there is no time for permission. Therefore, from the Pratimoksha vows, even if it is for the sake of others, it is not permitted to violate what is established. A Bodhisattva is one who acts for the sake of others, or knows that he will act, and does not interrupt his own merit that is more excellent than that, and increases it with the power of mental projection; these three situations are examined, and there is a time for permission. From the teaching of the path of the ten virtuous actions, it says: 'For those who do not consider their own benefit even slightly, but only desire to do things for others, and are always full of compassion, generally permission is given, except for the three non-virtuous actions of mind, or wrong view. For this, one should consult the treatises that establish the Bodhisattva vows.' This is to say that both intentions are initially examined at the root of their arising with sharp intellectual analysis, and their essence must be continuously connected with the thought of benefiting others, therefore arising from the path of mental action, these two.
