This also includes the occasions for granting permission. Some, based on these examples, argue that when Manjushri's (འཇམ་དཔལ་) faith was reversed and he joined the Lokayata, there was no mention of transgression, and that such analogies are unreasonable. Because the prescribed precepts follow the eye and ear, they indicate that wrong views arise through body and speech. However, the unprescribed precepts are skilled in taming these through the consciousness, and because there is no wrong view, the qualities of the Three Jewels are proclaimed in between. Wrong view itself is generated by bad motivation and is of all kinds, so it should be understood that there is no occasion for permission. How, then, are the actions of body and speech permitted? Like this, based on the fact that the cause and effect of both the actor and the recipient are covered by great compassion, taking the life of an executioner to save many lives, for example, knowing that a dark-skinned man with a short spear is about to take the lives of five hundred merchants, the captain, with great compassion, generates the mind to liberate the evildoer from karma and to free the merchants from the danger of death, and thus kills the man with the short spear; or, although wealthy, is miserly and does not give, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor for the benefit of both the hungry and the dying; or, like the Brahmin boy Star Lover, who, after practicing celibacy in the forest for eighty-two thousand years, went to the city for alms, and because he was attached to the merchant's daughter, suffered from desire and was about to die, abandoned celibacy to prevent this, and thus was reborn in the Brahma world; and to deliver someone who is certain to be killed from death, giving signals and lying, like a human lord performing sacrifices; or, to be completely deluded by evil friends and to be freed from being led into evil destinies, separating them with divisive speech; or, to forget the distraction of being overwhelmed by sorrow, or seeing the necessity of entering the Dharma, telling stories and jokes, and other such idle talk; and to prevent engaging in sinful actions, rebuking with harsh words, these, although seemingly unwholesome, are actually wholesome, and therefore are permitted. The obscurations of the mind
