The reasons are: the basis on which the mind of enlightenment depends, the loss of the aspirational mind; the opposing factors, the occurrence of root downfalls; the abandoning conditions, the abandonment of training, which are summarized into three. Among them, the twenty root downfalls are intended for those who clearly understand the boundaries of downfalls and are mostly accustomed to and stable in them. Apart from that, for beginners and others, they should strive to increase their wisdom and make them accustomed to the training. For example, for beginners, showing practices such as giving up from the beginning, which are impossible, is precisely the skillful means of the Buddha's discipline, showing the power of increasing wisdom. Otherwise, actions that are not related to time are also said to be downfalls. However, from the aspect of intention, one should strive as much as possible with fear of the faults of breaking vows, with regret, and with repentance. If one does not strive in this way, then the training established by the teacher will become meaningless. The fault of abandoning is being far from enlightenment and experiencing the endless suffering of samsara and the lower realms. The fault of root downfalls is stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "These are root downfalls, the cause of the great hells for sentient beings." Similarly, regarding abandoning training, if one cannot keep the Pratimoksha vows, it is allowed to abandon them. However, there are also four situations to examine regarding abandoning vows, but if one abandons the Bodhisattva vows, then the fault is very serious. In general, not only is the sole cause of accomplishing the benefit and happiness of oneself and others cut off, but also because one has abandoned the vow made until the essence of enlightenment. The Bodhicaryavatara says: "Having invited all beings with a determined and earnest mind to the supreme bliss, how can one go to happiness if one deceives them?" It means that deceiving all sentient beings, then he cannot have a basis for happiness. Having understood these reasons, even if one has tried one's best, the teacher Asanga also said: Due to the four gateways to the occurrence of downfalls: not knowing, negligence, increase of afflictions, and disrespect, the Sutra Requested by the Venerable Ananda says: Ananda, if a Bodhisattva who has entered the Great Vehicle commits a downfall at five o'clock in the morning, then for half a day, he will not be separated from the mind of all-knowing wisdom.

From here onwards, apply it to all situations in the same way. If one has purified oneself by noon, but then transgresses in the afternoon; if one transgresses in the afternoon, then in the evening; if one transgresses in the evening, then at midnight; if one transgresses at midnight, then at dawn, and so on. As it is said in the scriptures: 'O near one, thus it seems that for those Bodhisattvas who have truly entered the Great Vehicle, their precepts can be remedied.' As it is said, dividing each day and night into three parts, if one arrives with an antidote at the end of each sixth part, then his vows will not be broken. However, if one generates the thought that one cannot attain Buddhahood for the sake of others, and thus abandons Bodhicitta, then regardless of the time, it is immediately abandoned. Therefore, for others, if one arrives with repentance within the time period, that is merely a cause for decline. The limit of its confession is: for example, if one transgresses in the morning, at any point—beginning, middle, or end—of the first sixth part, then immediately in the second sixth part, in any part of that period, one can recover by confessing with strong remorse. Thus, if one does not exceed the limit of confession, even if one repeatedly commits root downfalls, they can still be remedied. If one exceeds the limit of confession, it is called 'transgression,' and it cannot be restored through remedy. Therefore, one must first engage in confession and restraint, and then take the vows again according to the ritual. Although this is the case, if one thinks that it is easy to transgress and easy to recover, and thus takes the precepts lightly, then the ritual of the four powers will be impaired, and one will end up abusing the Dharma. Regarding the method of how to confess through remedy: those with inferior faculties, because they strongly cling to objects, need to rely on shame and embarrassment, gathering ten or five individuals who hold the Mahayana precepts, and confessing their offenses without concealment to one or more of them, thereby rising from the downfall. Those with intermediate faculties, who are accustomed to deity yoga and have firm faith, should confess to the wisdom deity, especially Akashagarbha Bodhisattva, as it is said in their own sutras: 'The severance of roots of virtue is like the fortress of the fallen; the conduct of vows is like the mirror of the virtuous; shame and embarrassment are like the clothes of the knowing.' From the moment of downfall without interruption between day and night, one should only think of confessing sins and be filled with remorse. At dawn, bathe and cleanse
