Birth, etc., lords of power, etc., authors, etc., experiencers, etc., sound explained in various ways, and showing the absence of a lord as having a lord, these are called provisional meanings. Which sutras declare emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-manifestation of activity, unborn, unarisen, absence of things, selflessness, absence of sentient beings, absence of life, absence of persons, absence of a lord, and even the gate of liberation is not shown, these are called definitive meanings. That is, one should rely on sutras of definitive meaning, and not rely on sutras of provisional meaning. So it is said. Furthermore, if divided into detailed parts, it is the method of measuring with a system that possesses the four reliances. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, these four reliances of bodhisattvas are also inexhaustible. What are the four? They are as follows: Rely on the meaning, do not rely on the words; rely on wisdom, do not rely on discriminating consciousness; rely on sutras of definitive meaning, do not rely on sutras of provisional meaning; rely on the nature of phenomena, do not rely on individuals. So it is said. Among these, words refer to worldly dharmas, and meaning refers to that which transcends worldly dharmas. Discriminating consciousness refers to that which closely approaches and abides in form, feeling, perception, and formation. Wisdom refers to the complete understanding of the aggregate of discriminating consciousness that abides in the four aggregates. Provisional meaning is taught for the sake of entering the path. Definitive meaning is taught for the sake of entering the fruit. The nature of phenomena refers to immutability, etc. Individuals refer to those who abide in viewing as individuals, having inconceivable differences, which is taught by the sixth chapter of that sutra. In short, those that mainly teach the reality of intrinsic nature are called sutras of definitive meaning. In order to enter that intrinsic nature, all that guides the minds of sentient beings with various methods, and teaches the impurity of confusion and its various distinctions, etc., are called dharmas of provisional meaning. This is regarded as the mirror for viewing the scriptures, and the first key to opening them. Moreover, their intrinsic nature

In order to clarify and to understand the intent of the meaning, the two, intent and hidden meaning, are explained. First, the intent: There are also slightly exaggerated statements in the explanation, and in order to temporarily guide those to be tamed, it is not only for the sake of one person, but for a certain purpose and reason, and thus the four intents are shown. Thus, by dividing into sections, the essence of the scripture is clarified. The first part, because all the meanings to be explained are not completely as they are, there are still points to be understood, and for the benefit of others, it is not explained according to the literal meaning, but the four ways to understand its meaning are as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: Equality and different meaning, likewise different time, and the intention of the individual, know that there are four kinds of intent. In order to conform to these, the intent of equality is also shown to be contradictory. If the intent of different meaning is examined, it is shown to be unestablished. If understood with the intent of different time, it shows that enlightenment is attained effortlessly. If understood with the intent of the individual, it disparages the highest attachment to that individual. Among these, regarding the intent of equality, because the truth is not seen, therefore in the appearance of those who only see this shore, samsara and nirvana, good and bad, characteristics of what should be taken and what should be abandoned appear very contradictory, but the reality of all phenomena, in the state of naturally pure essence, is equal without being one or different. As stated in the Noble One Hundred and Fifty Verses: All are of the nature of space, but space also has no nature, if the nature of space is cultivated, then all will be perfected into supreme equality. Regarding the intent of different meaning, for the completely imputed, its nature is without self-nature, because it is not established in the ultimate truth; for the dependent arising, its birth is without self-nature, because birth from the four possibilities is not established. Thus, birth from oneself does not exist, because the one who is born and birth are momentary and contradictory; birth from another does not exist, because if the characteristics of other and self are examined, it is not established. Birth from both is also not established because of contradiction, and if there is no cause, the result of birth will cease. However, merely birth and so on that are in accordance with what appears are only like a dream or illusion, appearing from dependent arising. As stated in the Manjushri Dream Sutra: Manjushri, dreams appear but are not truly existent, likewise, all phenomena appear but are not truly existent. And so on, it is widely taught. For the perfectly established, it is the selflessness of ultimate truth, that is, the meaning of self-nature
