It comes from the earth element. In the Holy Definitive Explanation Sutra, Maitreya, all the virtuous dharmas of the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas, both worldly and transcendental, should be understood as the fruit of Shamatha and Vipassana. Furthermore, it is said that all the various Samadhis of the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, and Tathagatas that I have taught should be understood as being encompassed by Shamatha and Vipassana. Therefore, all the doors of Samadhi are encompassed by the union of Shamatha and Vipassana. Among them, Vipassana without a stable Shamatha is like a lamp carried by the wind. Shamatha without Vipassana cannot cut through all the nets of obscurations, just as the Shamatha of the four Dhyanas and the formless absorptions only causes one to wander in Samsara at the peak of existence. Therefore, with the power of Shamatha, the mind agitated by the wind of discursive thoughts can be stopped. With the power of Vipassana, one will not be shaken by the net of ignorance and the evil views of external opponents, such as the view of the aggregates as a self, nor will one be suppressed by evil doctrines and the mind of non-commitment. In the Sutra of the Moon Lamp, it is said: 'With the power of Shamatha, one becomes unmoving. With the power of Vipassana, one becomes like a mountain.' Thus it was declared. Among them, the Shravakas have more Samadhi and less wisdom. The Bodhisattvas are the opposite of that. The Tathagatas have both equally, and thus the way of seeing with the omniscient wisdom is described in the Holy Great Nirvana Sutra: 'The Shravakas do not see the lineage of the Tathagata because they have more Samadhi and less wisdom. The Bodhisattvas see it, but not clearly, because they have more wisdom and less Samadhi. The Tathagata sees everything because he possesses Shamatha and Vipassana equally.' Thus it was declared. Therefore, in the state of perfect equanimity, all dharmas are naturally luminous like the expanse of space, and the part that opens up understanding is unerring Vipassana.

If so, it is very important not to mistake the various kinds of mental distractions with bad thoughts for the wisdom of individual discrimination. Thus, Light Protector asked: What is individual discrimination? Light Protector, whatever is discriminated individually as selfless, etc. And so on, without force, individual discrimination is the correct individual discrimination of the Madhyamaka path and dharmas. Light Protector, furthermore, form is not individually discriminated as permanent, nor is it individually discriminated as impermanent. This is called individual discrimination of the Madhyamaka path and dharmas. Light Protector, what is called permanent is one extreme. What is called impermanent is two extremes. What is in the middle of the two extremes is inconceivable, unteachable, without support, non-manifest, non-consciousness, non-existent. Light Protector, this is the individual discrimination of the Madhyamaka path and dharmas, as it is clearly shown. Thus, before cultivating the union of calm abiding and insight, it is a special method of the Bodhisattva to focus the mind on the object of viewing all sentient beings with great compassion. At the time of the main practice, the extremely peaceful mind does not abide in the two extremes, and entering into samadhi in the state of pacifying the elaboration of object and subject is the very purity of its wisdom. As stated by the noble Inexhaustible Intelligence: What is the method of the Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? Whoever looks at sentient beings in samadhi, focusing the mind on the object of great compassion, that is his method. Whoever enters into samadhi in peace and extreme peace, that is his wisdom, as it is declared. If focusing the mind on the object of great compassion is mistaken for samadhi, then all the stages of cultivating relative Bodhicitta will be transformed into ultimate Bodhicitta, and the preparatory practices for the Mahayana path will no longer exist. Without that, at the time of the main practice, the virtuous practices encompassed by the three types of individuals, such as the absence of an object, will also be destroyed. Therefore, at the time of extreme samadhi, all those who rely on methods do not arise because they have an object. However, in that
