For example, some people in the world want to practice Samadhi but are busy with the necessities of life and afflicted by the conditions of life. Some want to practice Samadhi, applying this to all situations. They are lax in discipline, commit many wrongdoings, view things perversely, cling to the good and bad omens of the world, their body and mind are untamed, their minds are restless and agitated, they do not incline towards the noble path, their senses are unrestrained, they enjoy gossiping, creating discord, using harsh language to slander the noble ones, seizing power, speaking nonsense and lies, and due to greed and jealousy, they dislike the benefits, respect, and wealth of others, harbor resentment, and generate thoughts of harming sentient beings, holding wrong views and believing that there is no cause and effect. For example, they like and cling to things in their work, like and cling to jokes, indulge in sleep, seek wealth, like beautiful forms, pleasant sounds, fragrant smells, delicious tastes, soft touches, and thinking and analysis. Such things are widely explained. In the *Dranpa Nyerzhag* (Mindfulness Sutra), it is also mentioned: "Sons of good families, these ten things hinder the Samadhi and recitation of Bodhisattvas. What are these ten things? For example, listening to noisy talk, drawing pictures, composing poetry, paying attention to astrology, contemplating the stars, claiming acquired food as one's own, greedily accumulating wealth like a flesh-eating Rakshasa, relying on kings, not consulting the wise, inviting others to enjoy comfort, and living in haunted places. These are the ten things." Therefore, one should abandon these and abide solely in the non-distracted stream of mind, thereby practicing common Samadhi. Its function is to attain extreme suppleness of body and mind, thereby dwelling happily in this life and serving as the basis for accomplishing miraculous powers. Its result is the attainment of common qualities with the Shravakas, such as clairvoyance, liberation, cessation, and subjugation. The *Sutra Ornament* says: "It generates happiness, it controls the realm of clairvoyance, it is the most excellent of all dharmas."

That is, these three exist in them. Having fully understood such meditation, the wise will practice correctly. Thus it is. Even merely relying on the lineage of meditation has immeasurable benefits: The mind turns away from the merits of desire, afflictions naturally subside, one delights only in solitary places, and experiences many gateways to samadhi. Because of the manifestation of clairvoyance, one can accomplish the benefit of others. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, for example, a bird without wings cannot fly in the sky. Similarly, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, if he does not rely on clairvoyance, cannot teach the Dharma. Thus it was declared. The six clairvoyances are described in the Abhidharmakosha: "Miraculous powers, divine ear, mind reading, past lives, death and rebirth, and the knowledge of exhaustion should be done first." Therefore, it is knowing the realm of miraculous powers, knowing the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, the knowledge of remembering past lives, knowing death and rebirth, and one should first accomplish knowing the exhaustion of defilements. The explanation of worldly meditation is: The preliminary stage of the first dhyana has both investigation and analysis. The actual practice has no investigation but only analysis. The remaining three have neither investigation nor analysis. The former is the preliminary stage of the latter and is known as the basis of the noble path. Among these, there are two types of objects: those with form and those without form. The objects with form are the four dhyanas of learners and ordinary beings, their preliminary stages, and the samadhi attained through them. Accompanied by aspiration, not possessing the limbs of enlightenment, it is the cause for accomplishing the peak of existence, possessing equanimity, and possessing investigation and analysis. This is the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, which is the mind of application. Moreover, having transcended the craving for desire and sinful dharmas, possessing investigation, analysis, joy, and bliss, at that time it is called the first dhyana. From that, there is no investigation, only analysis, and it is said to be the special mind of the first dhyana. When one is free from investigation and analysis, having abandoned the craving of the first dhyana realm, possessing joy, bliss, and inner purity, that is the second dhyana.

Thus it is said. When one is free from the desire of the second dhyana, and is endowed with bliss, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, it is called the third dhyana. When one is free from the desire of the third dhyana, and is neither suffering nor happy, but is endowed with equanimity and mindfulness, it is called the fourth dhyana. The preparatory stages of the latter three dhyanas are accomplished by their respective preceding stages, as explained in the "Chapter on Grounds." Similarly, the four formless absorptions and the cessation absorption, these nine, are merely the basis for the noble path. There are six obstacles to attaining these samadhis: laziness, forgetting the object, sinking, excitement, non-application, and application. To counteract these obstacles, one cultivates eight abandonments, which are as follows: faith, desire, effort, and pliancy are the four antidotes to laziness. Faith is the strong belief in the qualities of attaining samadhi, and with desire, one initiates diligence. By its power, the mind becomes workable. Then, through physical and mental pliancy, laziness is reversed. Similarly, mindfulness is the antidote to forgetting the object, awareness is the antidote to sinking and excitement, non-application is the antidote to conception, and equanimity is the antidote to application. If one possesses these eight abandonments, then samadhi becomes workable, and all qualities such as miraculous powers can be accomplished. Therefore, it is also said in the sutras: "Cultivate the feet of miracles endowed with eight abandonments." Thus it was declared. The dhyana that transcends the world and generates all qualities is: grasped by compassion and supreme wisdom. Possessing many samadhis, accomplishing all aspects. Abandoning the co-emergent of the essence of wisdom, the grasper and the grasped. Arising from equipoise, obtaining freedom. It exists universally up to the seventh ground. It does not desire, possesses the limbs of enlightenment, and is able to abandon existence, therefore, relying on the samadhi that distinguishes meaning, accomplishing the special dhyana of the Sugata, which is the yoga practice of uniting shamatha and vipashyana.
