The reason for not being robbed (by external circumstances) is quiescence (shamatha). Fully understanding its nature is definitely insight (vipashyana), as stated in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra: 'Quiescence is one-pointedness of mind. Insight is accurate individual observation.' Therefore, knowing that one abides without clinging to objects, and from this arises extreme pliancy of body and mind, this is meditative stabilization (samadhi), which is the nature of quiescence, but it must also be related to insight. This is because quiescence only temporarily suppresses afflictions and does not eliminate obscurations. However, the wisdom of individual observation, which is of the same essence, the same nature, and at the same time has the function of eliminating obscurations, thoroughly destroys habitual tendencies and sees all phenomena as illusory, therefore it is insight with subsequent attainment. As stated in the Noble Sandhinirmocana Sutra: 'Dhyana (meditation) subdues afflictions, and wisdom destroys habitual tendencies.' And in the Entering Non-Conceptualization Sutra: 'The transcendental wisdom sees all phenomena equally, like the expanse of space. What is attained after that sees (all phenomena) as illusion, mirage, and moon in water.' If we differentiate, there are three types of dhyana: childish application, meaning-discriminating, and Tathagata-virtuous. Similarly, there are four dhyanas with and without investigation, and four formless absorptions, these are the number of types. The samadhi in the continuum of those who have not entered the path is dhyana, formless absorption, and childish application. The samadhi of those who have entered the path, in the stages of accumulation and application, is known as meaning-discriminating, which manifests the path of liberation. The samadhi of noble ones above the first ground is Tathagata-virtuous because it is without outflows. As stated in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'There are childish application dhyana, meaning-discriminating dhyana, and Tathagata-virtuous dhyana.' Among these, childish application dhyana exists in the continuum of those who have not entered the path, in dhyana and formless absorptions, this is the worldly path. Among the two transcendental paths, meaning-discriminating dhyana is the manifestation of the path of liberation through the samadhi of accumulation and application after entering the path. Tathagata-virtuous dhyana

From the first bhumi onwards, it is the stainless samadhi of the noble lineage. The essence of everything is to hold the mind inwards. The cause is continuous mindfulness with diligence. If it wanders, it is brought back again. The function is to generate happiness and accomplish siddhis. The result is the attainment of direct perception and so on. Among them, the essence of dhyana is that the mind abides in one-pointedness inwardly. The cause of accomplishment is continuous mindfulness, which must be accomplished relying on the auxiliary condition of diligence. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The mind abides inwardly, relying on mindfulness and diligence." Thus it is taught. At that time, if the mental activity is distracted and scattered, one should stabilize calm abiding with the nine ways of settling the mind as taught in the Perfection of Wisdom: namely, settling the mind on that and that, settling continuously, settling repeatedly, settling closely, taming, pacifying, completely pacifying, making one-pointed, and settling evenly. Among them, the first is settling the mind on the object. The second is settling continuously on that same object. The third is knowing and abandoning distraction. The fourth is abandoning distraction and then repeatedly striving to settle on that same object. The fifth is generating joy. The sixth is seeing the faults of distraction and completely pacifying displeasure. The seventh is dispelling dullness and sleep, and so on. The eighth is entering without manifest activity. The ninth is practicing equanimity when the mind has become even. Thus and so forth, the Protector Maitreya taught. At that time, one should strive to abandon the opposing factors of samadhi. From the Tenth Chapter of the Essence of Earth: Then, the Blessed One said to the Great Brahma: There are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt in or practiced. If a practitioner of yoga follows even one of these evil deeds, then even the roots of virtue in the desire realm will not be completely accomplished. Even if they are accomplished, they will immediately be lost and degenerate, let alone hearing about the samadhis of the form and formless realms, and the three vehicles and the one vehicle. What are these ten? They are:
