Thus manifesting intention, prostrate to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, make offerings to the best of your ability, perform confession, etc., and after performing the seven branches, on a very comfortable cushion, either sit in the full lotus posture of Vairochana or the half lotus posture is also fine, do not open the eyes too wide, nor close them too tightly, but focus on the tip of the nose. The body should not lean forward or backward, but be upright. Keep the shoulders level, without being high or low. Align the nose and navel in a straight line. Place the tongue against the root of the teeth. The breath should also not be noisy, heavy, or rushed, but inhale and exhale slowly and naturally, and abide with mindfulness placed within. Having abided thus, first focus the mind single-pointedly on the blessed form of the Tathagata previously seen, and the qualities and marks of the Buddha's appearance in the world that have been heard, thereby cultivating calm abiding. As it says in the Noble Samadhiraja Sutra: Like a body of golden hue, The protector of the world is utterly beautiful, Whoever places their mind on that object, That Bodhisattva abides in equipoise. Thus it is. Furthermore, the basis of cultivation is the mind, and its nature is as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: World Honored One, if one searches everywhere for the mind, it cannot be found. That which cannot be found is unobservable. That which is unobservable is neither past, nor future, nor presently arising. Therefore, it is permissible to focus on any object, whether form or formless. Pacify all distractions towards external objects, and let the appearance of elaboration dissolve into the nature of the single Dharmata. And this dissolving is not entering into a state of foolishness where appearances cease, but is naturally peaceful. Because there is no entity, it is subtle, because its characteristics are not established, it is difficult to observe. It is not that the field of appearance ceases, but that the perception of grasping at it is destroyed, this is the samadhi that possesses the utter abandonment of faults. As the former says: Samadhi is a place of equanimity, Peaceful, subtle, and difficult to see, Because all perceptions are destroyed, Therefore it is called samadhi. Abiding in such a state, bound by the rope of mindfulness, keep the focus continuous, and prevent sinking and excitement, etc.
