Sa. May the water bird's happiness increase. For example, when a water bird catches a fish, other water birds will compete and fight until the fish is lost. As soon as the fish is lost, the fighting stops, and they remain in peace. Similarly, the more worldly possessions one has, the more suffering of fighting and quarreling one experiences. But if one completely abandons worldly possessions, there will be no torment of suffering, and one will attain happiness. So it is said. Therefore, those who have no wealth are the opposite, because they have fewer affairs, it is easier to accomplish meditation. In particular: Among all riches, contentment is the most supreme. The teacher of gods and humans said so. Always be content, if you are content, even if you have no wealth, you are truly rich. As quoted before. The faults of associating with ordinary people are: The nature of ordinary people is childish. Childish people are covered with clouds of faults. They praise themselves and proclaim the bad names of others. They rely on the rough tongue of the serpent of afflictions. They think that any changing wealth is permanent. They are ungrateful and distort the image of satisfaction. The flames of hatred are fanned by the winds of slander. Like monkeys, they inflict various harms. Like crocodiles, they widen the belly of sin. Like venomous snakes, they destroy everyone they meet. Like fire, they will burn the trees of virtue. One should keep far away from the friendship of childish people. Therefore, the nature of childish ordinary people is afflicted, so they regard their own faults as virtues. They are also skilled at proclaiming the faults of others. Because they cannot control their afflictions, they increase rudeness and sinful Dharma. They think that the nature of samsara is changing and suffering, but they think it is permanent and happy, so they always strive to abandon the deeds of goodness and peace. In the Bodhicharyavatara it says: If you associate with children, for what you have done, self-praise and disparagement of others, and words that delight in samsara, all kinds of non-virtue will surely arise. So it is said. In particular, these people are ungrateful, repaying kindness with harm, and they have all kinds of desires, so there is no time for satisfaction. It is difficult to judge the measure of whether to be hostile or friendly. In the Bodhicharyavatara it says: In a single moment...

Friendship changes, and in an instant, it can turn into enmity. Being angry at things that bring joy, it is difficult to please ordinary people. Therefore, being fond of quarrels and sowing discord, one does not keep mindfulness close, and does not associate with harmonious groups, so the great wind of slander arises. Like a monkey, all actions become a source of harm. When many gather, there is fighting, quarreling, and much disputing, and even when two gather, they are a source of idle talk and jokes. The Bhagavan said in the Sutra: 'Many will quarrel, two will have words, like the bangles of a young woman, one should abide in peace alone.' Therefore, the bangles of a young woman are like this: for example, when a young woman is grinding sandalwood, she feels uncomfortable with many bangles on her arm, gradually removes them, leaving only two, but even these two clash and are uncomfortable, so she is comfortable only when one is left. Similarly, in a monastery, one will quarrel with friends, and even two will become objects of affliction, so being alone is praised. This is what the teacher Danaśīla said. In particular, nowadays, beings in the degenerate age of the five hundred, afflicted by the demons of the five degenerations, harm others through body, speech, and mind for no reason, slander the Dharma and the Sangha, and delight in dividing into factions, and even when protecting their own faction, they cannot be harmonious with others. In a letter to the king, it says: 'The more one tries to help, the more harm one causes. When one has, one feels sorrow, and when one does not have, one feels pain. When one associates, one sees faults and quarrels arise. This is the nature of beings.' Furthermore, one is jealous of those who are not equal, suppresses those who are equal, and despises those who are inferior. If one sees others slightly wealthy or praised, one becomes arrogant, and even if one hears a slight fault of oneself, one becomes angry. Being fond of killing, robbing, and hunting, the belly of sin is larger than that of a crocodile. Little meaning, much activity, distracted, fond of bustle, only creating evil deeds, like a poisonous snake, harming whoever one encounters. Associating with such people, being friends with them, and becoming their attendants, is like fire, burning the trees of virtue, and one naturally falls away from the Dharma.
