Patience is produced by relying on acceptance, relying on the ripening result, and relying on the path of virtue. Transcendental patience is to eliminate the four inversions, cultivate patience without attachment, and purify the three actions. Thus it is said. Therefore, the first two rely on the worldly aspect, as an aid to the five means, and are mainly practiced by beginners. The latter is the transcendental aspect, which, due to the stability of habituation, corresponds to the nature of wisdom. In short, without the three austerities of patience, one cannot accomplish the other five, such as generosity and discipline, as they are. For example, it is difficult to reach the desired place without the support of an army on a road surrounded by enemies, thieves, and wild animals. The same is true for generosity and so on, because they are closely related to their respective opposing factors, so all their faults must be guarded by relying on the three austerities of patience, therefore, one should generate the power of wisdom. The perfection of diligence is: diligence without delay, freely and independently, all good dharmas, like a swan walking in a lotus garden, without abandoning the cliff of laziness. Among them, the nature of diligence is a single-pointed mind that is manifestly joyful towards virtue, without delay. For example, in a wilderness or a place full of fear, a pair of swans brooding over eggs with anxious hearts, when the chicks' abilities are complete, focus on going to the lotus garden, without being interrupted by laziness or hesitation. In the Three Vows it says: Supreme Bodhi is achieved through diligence, otherwise, even rabbits and cats would attain Bodhi. It also says: You should be homeless and without intimacy, and do not gather cattle and donkeys. Do not choose a place of laziness. Abandon unwholesome dharmas and be diligent in wholesome dharmas. Kashyapa, I praise dwelling in virtue in many ways and abandoning bustle. Thus it is said. It also shows abandoning its opposing factors: evil deeds...

Entangled by the ropes of attachment and clinging, oppressed by the power of laziness, the strength of practice is also lost. Despising oneself, becoming disheartened, accepting a decadent way of life. Such a person is riding a ship of sin. In this regard, we have heard many collections of the Great and Small Vehicles, promising to practice, but in reality, once faced with actual situations, we abandon the heavy burdens of relying on the fruits of vast virtuous deeds, such as those arising from generosity, discipline, and meditation. We become lazy and unwilling to exert effort, crave sleep, and indulge in worldly affairs. Although widely known in the world, we cling to perverse diligence and evil deeds that are not suitable here, like sesame oil mixed into a container. We enjoy worldly activities such as commerce and agriculture, like a silkworm spinning its own cocoon. Seeing a little difficulty, we think that this task will surely not succeed, become lazy, destroy our mental strength, and also lose the power of our own practice. Despising oneself leads to the disintegration of the opposing forces, and with a depressed heart, we accept a disheartened and decadent way of life, like riding a ship full of numerous sins with loose iron nails. Even small adverse conditions can become obstacles. If one is weak, even a small downfall can cause harm. For those who are disheartened and abandon effort, how can there be any opportunity to escape from poverty? In particular, the habit of first making vows and then abandoning them midway, the corresponding result of this behavior will lead to an increase in sins in this life and an increase in suffering in the next life, and nothing that is undertaken will be successful. It may be best not to start, but once started, do not turn back. In future lives, one will become accustomed to doing so, sins and sufferings will increase, and the timing of other events and results will also deteriorate, and that too will not succeed. In general, the activities of the Dharma are solely to prevent faults and accomplish virtues. In particular, the object of practice on the Great Vehicle path, even relying on wisdom, seems difficult to reach. Someone like me thinks that this task cannot be accomplished, and is oppressed by the adverse conditions of laziness and self-despisement.
