Everything arises dependent on one's own conceptual clinging. Do the arrows of extremely harsh words pierce the hearts of individuals? By taking them as such, they become mutually entangled and tormented as support and supported. Like this, even if one experiences feelings of hatred like a broken heart due to harsh words and so on, which are the cause of increasing anger, no one has pierced or harmed the heart because it is a weapon of insubstantial words. Because of the proximate cause of formless mind and mental factors, the nature of being disturbed and tormented is known by mutually uniting as harmer and harmed, like support and supported, and not contemplating the nature of harm is the greatest antidote and its power is stable. However, for those who are great antidotes through contemplation, the sharp weapons of scripture and reasoning explained in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds and Engaging in Wisdom should also be practiced. Here, it is said in the Ganges Request Sutra: "Sons or daughters of good family should rely on and meditate on the Dharma of patience. If, while walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, someone comes and pours a pot of urine, a pot of poison, ashes, or excrement on their head, or if their whole body is afflicted, they should not generate thoughts of anger or resentment towards them, nor should they say, 'What fault have I committed?'" Similarly, apply this to everything. What touches what? Will it harm the body? Will it harm the mind? The body is like grass, trees, tiles, and reflections. Because it has no conceptualization and no awareness, it is neither self nor other. If it harms the mind, the mind is colorless and formless, arising and ceasing in an instant, not remaining for even a moment, so it is neither self nor other. Like that. Similarly, here the cause and effect of harm are limitless, arising from oneself, like sound and echo. If self does not arise, there is no object of harm. Look, it is called forth by the causes of one's past deeds. If there is no such thing as "self" from the beginning, then clinging to others or another, and based on that, anger and strife...

The causes and conditions for anger do not arise. Just as an echo does not arise without a sound. Therefore, anger or quarrels, etc., are interdependent. In particular, if one has not previously created the cause of harm in a previous life or in the present state, the other party cannot produce the result of harm. Therefore, in general, one should know that it is by relying on one's own existence that the harm of others arises, and in particular, it is by relying on one's own past karma that one becomes the object of harm. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'I have harmed sentient beings in the past, in this way, therefore these sentient beings now harm me.' Like this, seeing that the responsibility for harm lies with oneself, one should not be angry at all the attacks, insults, threats, exposing of faults, beatings, robberies, seizing of enjoyments and power, and inflicting harm on body and life by others and other beings. Because this is the basis for the arising of all the qualities of the great and small vehicles, one must train in patience. As it is said in the Kṣāntivādajātaka: 'I also know for certain that I am experiencing the ripening of suffering from past deeds. Remembering the four truths and right abandonment, the powerful limbs of enlightenment, all have patience as their basis, who among the wise would not cultivate patience?' And so on. In particular, in order to show how patience is accomplished from the causes of harm, if one examines, is not great harm a great benefit? Relying on it, one can obtain the ship of patience and the jewel of bodhicitta, such harm should be revered like the holy Dharma. Because patience does not arise without harm, the Bengali Paṇḍita always associated with an Ācārya who was prone to anger, saying, 'This is the basis of my patience.' Therefore, when our teacher, the sage, became one who spoke of patience, the king quarreled and wandered in the forest with his consort. The consort's attendants saw the sage and, having faith, listened to the Dharma, the king became angry and cut off the sage's limbs. The sage said: 'By the truth that I myself have no fault, may the blood turn into milk and the limbs be restored as before.' And so it happened. The king from then on began to be patient.
