The method of how each of those eleven (Bodhisattvas) accomplishes eleven kinds of benefits according to the circumstances is explained by the teacher Asanga in the "Root Commentary on the Bodhisattva Grounds." Here, the near enemies of the first five perfections, such as generosity, are stinginess, affliction, resentment, laziness, and savoring the taste of meditative absorption, which are the five opposing factors of each. The near enemies of wisdom are the five obstacles that pervert or do not pervert the benefits of virtue, the causes of virtue, and the fruits of virtue, and that cut off the accumulation of virtue. Having understood them as they are, abandoning their five opposing factors and obstacles is the cause of the perfection of discipline that accumulates virtue. To this end, it also explains the six places of examination that were spoken of. The six examinations that were spoken of are to examine one's own prosperity and decline in relation to the Dharma. One should not be corrupted on the path of Dharma and should work for the benefit of others. Examine the mistakes of ordinary people who have lost their own benefit. The six examinations are from the Compendium: A Bodhisattva who strives in discipline for the benefit of sentient beings should examine the six objects of observation separately: oneself, others, lack of resources, abundance of resources, lack of Dharma, and abundance of Dharma are the six places. What is called lack of resources is that one does not obtain robes and alms, etc., and that those who obtain and continue to practice will be interrupted. Abundance of resources should be understood as the opposite of this. What is called lack of Dharma is that the precepts are impaired, and that one does not have the opportunity to hear the words of the Dharma of the ultimate meaning spoken by the Tathagata, which one has not heard before, and that one does not have the opportunity to think about what one has not heard before, just as one has not thought about it before, and that there are obstacles to hearing and obstacles to thinking, and that one forgets hearing and thinking, and that one does not obtain the virtue arising from cultivation, and that what one has obtained will be completely impaired. Abundance of Dharma should be understood as the opposite of this. Thus, oneself and others are the basis of the prosperity and decline of Dharma and resources, so the other four are also included in them. Having examined the six places in this way, the method of engaging and disengaging is also quoted from the Compendium in an easy-to-understand way: One's own place of learning is not corrupted.

If one can accomplish great benefit for others, one should prioritize benefiting others. Children and ordinary people are the opposite at the time of their birth, so in order to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings later, one should examine one's own mistaken thoughts and the faults arising from them with the eye of wisdom, and focus on protecting what has happened and what will happen. From the aspect of the means of great compassion, one should also incidentally accomplish the benefit of others. If it is possible to accomplish great benefit for others, it is permissible to slightly relax small restrictions. For example, one can give up villages for the sake of cities, give up land for oneself, and even give up oneself for the sake of the Dharma. The vows of a Bodhisattva are governed by the mind of the Vijnanavada school, which has great compassion and skillful means, and by the nature of wisdom, which is the opposite of the mind that clings to reality and is defiled. Therefore, if it is certain that one can accomplish great benefit for sentient beings, even if one obstructs the subtle vows of body and speech of the lower classes, one should accept whatever is the source of Bodhicitta, higher intention, skillful means, wisdom, Samadhi, liberation, and excellent qualities, which are the trainings of the virtuous mind, because one has compassion and love, so there is no fault in a virtuous mind. As mentioned above. That is to say, one should not give up great benefit for the sake of small benefit, but rather give up small benefit in order to accomplish great benefit, and in the end, one must protect the supreme Dharma to be accomplished, and only then is there no fault. As it says in the Jataka tales: For the sake of the family, give up one person; for the sake of life, give up the family; for the sake of the country, give up the city; for one's own sake, give up the land; and for the sake of the Dharma, one can even give up oneself. In general, as soon as a Bodhisattva takes vows, he should learn to accumulate virtuous Dharma and benefit sentient beings, but since it is difficult to truly benefit others without direct wisdom, one should focus on learning the conduct that is appropriate to one's own capacity, starting from generating Bodhicitta and taking a Yidam. For beginners, the discipline of the vows is the main thing, so it is the practice of the Yidam. For those who act with faith, the discipline of accumulating virtuous Dharma is the main thing, so it is Samadhi.
