The seven schools that branched off are: Sarvāstivāda, Kāśyapīya, Dharmaguptaka, Bahuśrutīya, Bhūmiśrāvakāḥ, Kāśāyavasana, and Vibhajyavāda. The Mahāsāṃghika is the lineage of the Brahmin caste Mahākāśyapa, from which five schools branched off: Pūrvashaila, Aparashaila, Haimavata, Prajñaptivāda, and Lokottaravāda. The Sthavira school is the lineage of the bamboo craftsman Kātyāyana, from which three schools branched off: Mahāvihāravāsins, Abhayagirivāsins, and Jetavanavāsins. The Sammatīya school is the lineage of the butcher caste Upāli, from which three schools branched off: Kurukullaka, Avantaka, and Vātsīputrīya. In general, summarizing, there are eighteen Śrāvakayāna schools. The distinctions between these schools are scattered throughout the Vinaya Pitaka and are clearly explained in texts such as "Light," "The Wheel of Recitation," and "The Fundamental Treatise on the Division of Schools." The Sarvāstivāda school is the most prevalent in Tibet. Although these schools differ in form, they are all related to the practices of the five monastic communities, and it is impossible to go beyond the scope established by Śākyamuni Buddha. Therefore, like the divination of Kṛki, all precepts should be organized and summarized to obtain authority over all trainings and be strictly guarded. If they are not guarded, from the perspective of root downfalls, even if precepts are given without concealment and can be rectified, the fundamental cause of failure cannot be completely eliminated until the ultimate fruit of liberation, the state of an Arhat, is attained, thus delaying the attainment of liberation for a long time. As stated in the Vinaya Pitaka: "One will not hear the sacred Dharma, and having heard it, one will quickly forget it. Realization of the stages and paths will not arise at all." Due to the fault of degeneration, like the leaves of the Ela plant, one will fall into the realm of animals, and according to the severity of the offenses—Parājika, Saṃghāvaśeṣa, Sthūlātyaya, Prāyaścittika, Prātideśanīya, and Duṣkṛta—one will be born in the hot hells up to the reviving hells in sequence, as extensively explained in the Sutras. The benefits of guarding the precepts are: generally, in this life, one can be freed from illness, the punishment of kings, and poverty. Taking precepts with the intention of seeking liberation is the discipline of protecting from fear; aiming only to obtain the happiness of gods and humans in future lives is good.

It is the discipline of aspiration. Although neither of the two can liberate from samsara, they only temporarily connect with the happiness and results of each. As the deity of Sakya said: The highly praised wealth is a tree of abundance, born in the sacred palace of the gods. When the thought of renunciation arises in one's mind, one becomes characterized by individual liberation, because this vow is the very nature of definitely arising from samsara. As it is said in the Sutra of the Ten Wheels of the Essence of the Earth: Do not look at all the ripenings of existence, but protect them. It is also like this, just as Chung Gawa (གཅུང་དགའ་བོ།) showed the suffering of hell through the magical power of teaching the discipline of good aspirations, thereby transforming the characteristics of individual liberation into abiding and attaining the Arhatship. Therefore, those who possess understanding should not regard mere disciplinarians as great, but should know that wherever the nature of samsara revolves, it is like a pit of fire and the depths of the ocean, and is the nature of suffering. Only with the thought of renunciation should one take the vows of individual liberation, which is the tenet of the Hearers' own school. Furthermore, if it is taken with the Mahayana mind of enlightenment, then the eight types of individual liberation can also be transformed into the individual liberation of a Bodhisattva, which is accepted. The Bengali Pandit also said: Even the vows of individual liberation should be elevated by the mind of enlightenment. This exists. The benefits are: In the Sutra of the Greatly Cherished Bhikshu, it says: Whichever discipline is extremely good, that person who is restrained has a beautiful form, abides near discipline, and the discipline of morality itself is supreme. That person, even in one day, accumulates immeasurable heaps of merit and accomplishes the fruit of Buddhahood. As the scholar Hero said: Divine substance, joy, human enjoyment, supreme bliss, supreme taste, divine perfection, what is more wonderful than that which arises from discipline? Look, all the Buddha's teachings arise from that. Like that. In particular, in times when the teachings are flourishing, the entire foundation of learning is fully protected, but now, as the teachings are nearing decline, those who have entered the path of the teachings are even more untamed and unrestrained, far from renunciation, fond of associating with householders and following them, in such times.
