JLAZ002 0005.Commentary on Chapter Nine..g2.0f

English

Having the nature of subduing, therefore abandoning the faults of wrong livelihood and arrogance, possessing the virtue of enduring insults. Dwelling in one place and eating, which is not eating repeatedly. If, after eating, one does not rise from the seat, even if one takes the water for washing the bowl, one does not eat again. After obtaining food separately, after eating a fixed amount of food, one does not eat again, that is the limit of food. Thus it is said. The one who always sits, not leaning on the bedding to sit, but sitting in the lotus position, keeping the body upright. As the former said: Because the vow comes first, one abandons the posture of leaning and sitting, having this state, therefore is the one who always sits. Thus it is said. Not accepting food sent afterwards, as it says: Cutting off food sent afterwards. Because one has taken a vow, one has no greed or attachment, has contentment, and conforms to the behavior of faith. Thus it is. The one with three Dharma robes, having the state of wearing the sanghati, uttarasanga, and antarvasa, therefore is the one with three Dharma robes. The one who wears felt, for the felt made of wool that has not been woven, the world calls it felt, having contentment and wearing it. The one who dwells wherever, not being satisfied with the bedding obtained wherever, having no attachment to good bedding, dwelling in dwelling wherever. The one who dwells in the charnel ground, in order to feel disgusted and prevent carelessness, dwells in a place without fear in the charnel ground. The one who dwells under a tree, under a tree having abandoned a sheltered dwelling, having the concept of impermanence from the changes of the four seasons there and dwelling. The one who dwells in the open, not dwelling in houses and other dwellings, dwelling in a place that does not obscure the light and images of the sun, moon, and stars. Having practiced thus, after fully receiving these qualities, one should not praise oneself, slander others, and should not follow the path of the unholy. Now, in order to show the permissibility of incidental implications, here, apart from the seventeen parajikas and sanghavasesas, for the blessed objects that are not allowed to be enjoyed: If one must eat food at an inappropriate time, taking pleasure in a place where the sound is not pleasing, similarly, for bathing, a sick person may have extra clothes, or white clothes that are not allowed to be worn, or because of poverty and distress, it is allowed to wear leather etc. in order to preserve life, thinking thus, and touching precious things.

Meditate on allowing for the purpose of offering to the Three Jewels and healing sentient beings. For things that are neither allowed nor prohibited, follow what has been said. In this regard, if one is unable to practice the minor precepts other than the four defeats and thirteen sanghavasesas, one should generate the mind of blessing. Regarding untimely food, or if one must eat repeatedly, in general, from the four types of discipline: nature, dharma, vows, and abandonment, all unpleasant sounds of the north are of the nature of discipline, so one can enjoy them in that continent by generating the mind. If one bathes at an improper time, thinking that it is allowed to bathe in order to prevent oneself from getting sick. If one needs to use extra clothes, or unsuitable white clothes and leather, one should think that because of the lack of clothes and mats, or because of being exhausted by the cold and facing death, one is now allowed to enjoy them. If one needs to touch or possess precious things, one should generate the mind that it is allowed for the purpose of offering to the Three Jewels and benefiting sentient beings. Furthermore, for the allowances and prohibitions that are not explicitly mentioned, one can know from the miscellaneous teachings. Monks, I have taught you the Vinaya extensively, but not in brief. However, listen to the brief explanation. Monks, for things that I have neither allowed nor prohibited from the beginning, if it is close to what is allowed and can prevent what is not allowed, then it should be considered allowed. If it is close to what is not allowed and can prevent what is allowed, then it should be considered not allowed and should not be practiced universally. This is easy to understand. Therefore, the Three Hundred Verses says: For what is not allowed and not prohibited, one should examine and follow what has been said. This lamp called the Condensed Vinaya, the Tathagata has also spoken in this way. In short, the Sarvastivada, the Mahasanghika, the Sthavira, and the Mahasammatas, the precepts of all four schools, it is impossible for the Teacher's precepts to cover everything, so one can obtain authority over all the precepts. After the Teacher passed into Nirvana

After more than a hundred years from the syllable Om (ओम्,oṃ,literally meaning: Om), a malicious person with the appearance of a bhikṣu caused a great schism in the sangha with five points, resulting in the division into two fundamental schools, namely the Sthavira school and the Mahāsāṃghika school. Due to the schism, the Sthavira school split into ten and the Mahāsāṃghika school into eight. During the sixty-three years that these schools existed, the sangha was divided and in a state of turmoil, and finally the teachings were correctly reorganized by the son of the Sthavira Sthaviramati. At that time, the division of the sangha was not a division of the wheel of Dharma, as the Abhidharmakośa states: "The initial marginal fault, the previous Sugata's error, and the unestablished boundaries, etc., do not cause a division of the wheel of Dharma." Therefore, the divider was a bhikṣu with views and conduct, and apart from Sthavira, the objects of division were eight sanghas of ordinary people. Ultimately, other than the Buddha, Devadatta became the teacher, and other than the true Dharma, Devadatta's five ascetic practices were regarded as the path and were accepted and adopted, and only then was there a division. Therefore, at this time, the teacher was neither alive nor receiving offerings, and there were also problems with the teachings, because there were no terms such as within the boundary designated by a pair of supreme ones. In general, such a fault is not accidental, because from the division of the sangha to the non-reconciliation, in a Buddha's realm, none of the five paths will arise. This is how it is said. This refers to the dispute of relying on inner partiality because the other party has spoken discordant words, and therefore holding a grudge, the inner cause is attachment to self, the outer cause is the false establishment of the suchness of things, in addition, abandoning the instructions, accompanied by downfall, inconsistent giving of actions, these four causes of dispute, in the root Vinaya of the pacification ritual it says: "Manifest memory is not madness, likewise the essence of anything, like spreading grass, and one should not promise." Like this, there are seven methods of pacification. The four schools are: Sarvāstivāda, Mahāsāṃghika, Sthavira, and Mahāsaṃghika. The first of these schools is the lineage of the Kshatriya caste Rāhula, from there...
