Therefore, due to the multitude and the very nature of things to be abandoned, one abides by striving to abandon them, hence it is a downfall. Thus it is said. If categorized, each category of robes, mats, bowls, etc., has ten, making thirty expiatory downfalls. If explained based on treatises, it is feared it would be too extensive. From the clear determination of the three vows of one's own tradition: Holding onto one's extra robes for more than ten days 1; being separated from the Dharma robe for a full day 2; keeping robe material for a month 3; and having a nun wash the Dharma robe 4, and taking robe material from it 5; asking for robe material from non-intimate laypeople 6; if given, taking more than the upper and lower garments 7; thinking of giving to oneself and storing the Dharma robe somewhere, asking for it with price and measurement 8, examining and remembering to ask for it 9, Receiving precious items entrusted with the price of robes 10. Making a mat with silk and wool mixed 11; spreading only black wool as a mat in a secluded place 12; making a mat with two parts black wool 13; making a new mat before six years have passed 14; and remaking even if there is a standard cushion 15; if black wool is found, using it at the end of three kroshas (approximately 9 kilometers) of the road 16. For a nun, it is having her wash wool and beat wool 17; receiving gold and silver 18; engaging in buying and selling with obvious signs 19; specifically engaging in buying and selling 20; accepting an unblessed bowl, holding it for more than ten days 21; holding two bowls 22; having weaving done without pay 23; expanding the scale of weaving 24; taking back robes given by a monk 25; taking possession of unexpectedly obtained robes earlier than the time stated at the time of giving 26; being separated from robes for more than seven days due to fear in a monastery 27; even if the prohibition and permission of large cloths have ended, more than half a month has passed 28; taking possession of offerings dedicated to the Sangha 29; storing medicine for illness after seven days have passed 30. If used, one falls into lower realms, and if confessed, there is no need to abandon beforehand, therefore the ninety individual offenses are: The ninety individual downfalls are: Knowingly telling a lie 1; speaking ill of a monk 2; causing discord with divisive speech 3; even if reconciling disputes, causing division 4; teaching Dharma to women 5; with one who has not taken the full monastic vows, reciting Dharma together 6; accepting a bad dwelling, speaking of downfalls 7; speaking truthfully with worldly matters as the guru 8; showing contempt out of consideration for acquaintances 9; belittling the objects of training 10; cutting off the growth of seeds 11; showing contempt out of consideration for oneself 12; not listening to advice, and answering others when one has not heard about the arising downfalls 13.
