The ten things to be abandoned are actually shown, and the ten coarse dharmas to be abandoned are identified. Among them, in order to know the boundary of avoiding harming the lives of others, which is the first of the four root vows, it includes abstaining from killing. Killing a person or something with the concept of a person, stealing valuable objects, engaging in impure conduct, falsely claiming to have superhuman qualities, if these four root vows are complete with the basis, intention, action, and ultimate result, it is called defeat, that is, breaking the precepts. Among them, not concealing is recoverable, and concealing is irrecoverable, which is also the view of each sect. The *Light Sutra* says: If a novice monk loses his precepts due to fundamental sins such as killing, then like a bhikshu, the novice monk will not have the opportunity to obtain the precepts in the future. And the *Extensive Commentary* says: For the four root vows, just like a bhikshu, the same applies to the parents of a novice monk. So it is said. Among the six transgressions of the branch of confession, drinking alcohol leads to the loss of the branch of mindfulness. The *Vinaya Sutra* says: Anyone who claims to be a layperson or above who is a disciple of Shakyamuni cannot brew, sell, or drink alcohol. If it is not like this, then he is not my retinue, and I am not his teacher. Therefore, any kind of intoxicating substance fermented from grains, medicines, flowers, etc. If the novice monk's precepts, which are the basis, have been well obtained and not damaged, the intention is not confused, the action is drinking, and finally swallowing into the throat, this will become a fundamental sin similar to defeat, that is, an act to be prohibited. Drinking alcohol leads to confusion of consciousness and becomes the root of the four shamelessnesses and all downfalls and evil deeds. Therefore, in the Pratimoksha, this precept is considered a great sin. The Pandit Sadjana also said: If, after drinking alcohol, discipline, meditation, wisdom, view, livelihood, rituals, as well as mindfulness, awareness, faith, and diligence decline, and virtuous dharmas are destroyed, then one should not drink alcohol. In the *Shakyamuni Joyful Sutra*, it says: There are twenty-five faults of intoxication. And so on. The remaining five are called the branches of deportment, such as singing and dancing, which refer to the unrestrained and dissolute singing and dancing of the body, and

Singing and dancing. The prohibitions against playing musical instruments and combining three types of music, etc., are because the thought of amusement increases attachment to samsara and leads to obesity and arrogance. Necklaces, etc., refer to necklaces, applying incense, decorations, and colors. It is said that wearing precious or adorned necklaces, anointing the body with fragrant scents, and adorning the body with decorations that are considered beautiful in the world, such as sewing tassels on Han hats, and relying on covered containers, etc., are all prohibited. Color refers to beautiful clothes, etc., that look beautiful in specific places, times, and occasions. A high bed seat refers to a throne or bed made of jewels, or a bed adorned with jewels, and sitting on a seat that is more than one cubit higher than one's own height. All of these are because others offer them in order to accumulate merit, or it is not a time for teaching the Dharma, as stated in the "Three Hundred Verses." Afternoon food refers to food taken at an inappropriate time. The time for eating is from dawn until noon. Dawn appears when half of the seventh part of the night, which has been divided into nine parts, remains. It is said that even during that time, one should eat in order to strengthen the body for achieving liberation and for nourishing insects. Furthermore, time refers to someone who is not suffering from a disease that benefits oneself, nor someone who is suffering from famine. What is in accordance with the rules is that whether it is half or whole, it has not been separated by water at the beginning and end. Even if it is medicine, one should inconspicuously drink it in the afternoon, like medicinal yogurt that can be taken. Seven-day-old ghee and brown sugar, etc., should be eaten without being soaked in water or blessed. And medicinal tea, etc., carried for sustenance should not be soaked in water, or one should not drink it without rinsing one's mouth with water first. Furthermore, it is forbidden to eat expired food, rotten food, and meat that does not meet the standards of the three purities, as well as storing food, etc. The reason for the prohibition is that it leads to obesity and causes one to engage in activities that one should not engage in. Accepting gold and silver refers to touching and accepting characteristic jewels, etc., that have not been blessed. The basis, thought, action, and ultimate result are the same as before. The reason for the prohibition is that it generates attachment to valuable objects.
