Even if alcohol is placed among the branches, if it is not abandoned, all other trainings cannot be protected. Whatever those trainings may be, they must be protected for as long as one lives. Among them, the division of the four root downfalls into halves refers to the distinction between sexual misconduct and celibacy. For example, in the ritual where King Loving's power caused the five Yaksha brothers to take the upavāsa vows, non-celibacy is described as sexual misconduct, considering that it is easier for householders to protect. As stated in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: "Sexual misconduct is greatly condemned, and should not be done because it is easy, and because it is attainable." Upavāsa means: It is difficult for those who live at home to practice celibacy at all times, so for the sake of combining it with one day and one night of celibacy, the eight-branched sojong [poṣadha] is taught. Among the ten trainings of the ordained, taking gold and silver is permitted for the sake of raising sons and daughters. Dancing and garlands, these two are considered minor faults by householders and counted as one. The so-called eight-branched precepts refer to constant protection without interruption. A layperson like Chandra Gomi is like that. On top of that, adding the ten things that a śrāmaṇera should abandon, taking gold and silver is not prohibited for householders, considering the need to raise sons and daughters. Similarly, dancing, garlands, etc., are counted separately for śrāmaṇeras, but for householders, they are minor faults, so they are counted as one. This is stated in the Section on Categories [vastu]. In reality, except for taking gold and silver, all the other nine must be abandoned by those observing upavāsa. But it is only nominally called the eight-branched precepts. As stated in the Letter to a Friend [Suhrllekha]: "Non-harming, non-stealing, non-sexual misconduct, non-lying, and non-drinking alcohol, unseasonal food, attachment to fine clothes, high and large beds should not be done, abandoning singing, dancing, and garlands, diligently practicing the precepts of an arhat, possessing these eight-branched precepts, can grant to men and women, desirable deva bodies and enjoyments." It means that with the result of one day and one night of fasting, one can be reborn in any of the six desire realms as one wishes. A branch refers to a common branch, as stated in the Great Commentary on the Letter to a Friend. Therefore, the object of protection of the upavāsa vows, promising to protect for one day and one night, and protecting it, is the characteristic of one's own vows, as stated in the Commentary on the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa].

Some say: Take it on the days when protection is needed. There is no situation where you don't need to take it after taking it the first time. After saying this, the laypeople established time rules in order to take and protect on the occasions of the eighth, fifteenth, and thirtieth days, and the four major festivals. If the lay practitioners who possess these precepts take them, it becomes Uposatha, because it nourishes the precepts and purifies transgressions. In this way, the eight branches of the precepts of abiding in proximity are not taken occasionally, but are constantly guarded as the basis of virtue, and are called Gomi lay practitioners, just like Prince Mahakarunachitta and Master Chandragomi. However, although this is not accepted by the Sarvastivadins, Vasubandhu is accepted according to the Theravada school.

It is immaculate. Because it is not mixed with unwholesome elements, it is unmixed. Because it is not entirely dedicated to worldly and pleasurable purposes, it is unpolluted. Because it does not transform into other forms, it is unstained. Thus, possessing the five qualities of non-degeneration, etc., the discipline, being liberated from craving, is autonomous. Such discipline is praised by the wise and the assembly of noble ones. With discipline, the mind abides in equanimity, and thus also accomplishes samadhi. Just as the earth is the cause of birth, abiding, and growth for beings who move and do not move, so too, discipline is the foundation of all qualities such as samadhi. Therefore, the teacher Aryadeva said: Your discipline is neither degenerated nor inferior, practice the unmixed and unpolluted discipline. Discipline, like the earth for those who move and do not move, is the foundation of all qualities. Thus it is said. To purify such discipline, after taking full ordination, without interruption for ten or five years, and without possessing the two qualities of steadfastness and intelligence, if one's own preceptor is present, one should rely on the preceptor, and if not, one should rely on a monk worthy of being a lama, and perform the ceremony of dwelling. As it is said in the Karika: In front of the lamas, one should not spit or discard saliva, one should not eat toothpicks, it is not the seat of an ascetic. One should not fold in front, nor should one wear only one garment. Like this, relying on the preceptor together, one should not do everything according to one's own whims, but must ask and then do it, as it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Relying on a virtuous friend is celibacy, the Buddha said it is fully accomplished, therefore. Like this. So, what is the object of what should be learned? In the Three Hundred Verses it says: Whatever killing, stealing the wealth of others, non-celibacy, lying, drinking mixed alcohol, etc., dancing, garlands, large high beds, and eating after noon, accepting gold and silver should be abandoned. Subduing the enemy of afflictions is discipline, the asceticism of a novice is like building a dam, it is the method of extracting the fangs of death, it is the empowerment of obtaining the glory of complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. So, what are the ten roots that should be learned? The four root prohibitions and the six branch prohibitions.
