Repeating it three times when the other person still doesn't believe, and being stingy and not giving away wealth, it is helpful to overcome these failures. As it says in the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: If a beggar appears before you, but you are too poor to give, by no means let the beggar be disappointed. Soothe his mind with gentle words. If a beggar comes before you in the future, by no means let him be disappointed and discouraged. Completely eliminate the faults of stinginess, and strive to completely abandon craving. Thus it is said. Therefore, stinginess and craving are obstacles to giving. Think like this: I have not been accustomed to giving in the past, so I am still stingy now. Because of this, in the future I will not like giving and will become poor, which is inevitable. Therefore, by no means let it control you. If you have little, it is because you did not help others in past lives. Now you are ashamed of being poor, but the cause of becoming wealthy in the future is only giving. Therefore, do not turn away beggars. If you become attached to the object to be given, think like this: If I do not completely control it, my inverted attachment to it and unwillingness to part with it will be the cause of suffering. Therefore, cut off attachment. If you do not see that the benefit of giving is the arising of enlightenment, but only see the benefit of enjoyment, then, alas! All conditioned phenomena are impermanent and will separate. Receiving the fruit of giving once is like a merchant gaining profit. Although you gain profit, it is not merit, just like experiencing happiness in a dream. Therefore, transform the fruit of giving into the cause of attaining supreme enlightenment. In general, inexhaustible resources are not present in all situations until the first ground is attained. Therefore, a wise Bodhisattva, with a very pure intention, even mentally creates vast objects of giving and generates the intention to give them to all sentient beings. As it says in the Bodhisattva Grounds: Thus, a Bodhisattva does not have those resources until he has attained a completely pure intention. Even without them, he gives with wisdom. How does the Bodhisattva's superior pure intention truly liberate from the lower realms?
