And also, give a little wealth to encourage them to give alms; for those who have no means, give the means of giving alms, and let them give alms to the Three Jewels; if you yourself have no wealth, engage in blameless crafts, or engage in various occupations that you have acquired through hard work, accumulate wealth, and thus engage in the work of giving alms; do not become an obstacle to others giving alms, and do not withdraw the objects that have been determined to be given as alms. Furthermore, it is necessary to discern what can be given and what cannot be given. Whatever object it may be, as long as it immediately separates from the cause of bad destinies and generates a feeling of happiness, and ultimately leads to abandoning evil and practicing virtue; or even if it does not immediately bring happiness, but ultimately is a cause of benefit, a Bodhisattva should give it as alms. Whatever is given that immediately brings happiness but ultimately causes harm; or that causes suffering both immediately and ultimately, should not be given. For example, in the first case, if a Bodhisattva gives away animals such as livestock that he owns to others, it is to avoid them being slaughtered or suffering torture, etc. Furthermore, if one becomes like a king, taking away the children and wives of others to give as alms; or taking from the possessions of parents, the Sangha, the Three Jewels, servants, etc., to give to others; or giving by means of harming others; or giving objects that are unsuitable for those who uphold vows; or giving leftovers of food and drink, etc. Similarly, even if out of pure compassion, the time comes to give away one's body and life, one should not give away important parts like limbs for trivial needs; even if one has a full intention to give alms, but if the other party does not accept the body, then not giving the body itself is more important for accomplishing the benefit of many sentient beings; for the gods of the demonic hosts, and for unruly sentient beings possessed by them, who make demands out of arrogance; or for demands made by madmen and those with disturbed minds, because their senses are not in a normal state and they are tormented, therefore one should not give to them. If one gives, it is said to be a downfall. Similarly, for those who are not friendly, and for yakshas and rakshasas, etc., in short, for those who oppress with violent force, for those who are ungrateful, for those who break vows,

Giving sons, wives, servants, etc., to those who will become impoverished; giving unsuitable food and drink to those who are ill; giving scriptures to non-Buddhists who seek disputes and do not respect religion, even though they regard it as wealth; giving images and meanings of scriptures that are disguised as Dharma to others; giving land to hunters; giving rivers to fishermen; giving adversaries to enemies; giving the three robes, but not extra ones, to bodhisattvas who have already renounced, etc., are not allowed. For those, do not say in harsh words, "I will not give this to you," but rather convey the message skillfully. If the other person is intelligent, say this: "Do not misunderstand that I am not giving this beautiful thing to you because I am attached to it. Like this, practitioners, regarding Dharma robes, etc., after observing the Khenpo and Acharya, make a vow and hold them. The utensils of the Bodhisattvas are dedicated to the Buddhas and Buddha-sons, and after being offered, they are held as if entrusted to oneself. Therefore, taking and giving others' belongings without permission is a great fault for both of us." Make him understand this, and then give from other items without changing his mind. In general, if our utensils are also dedicated from the depths of our hearts and held in the manner of being entrusted, we can accumulate great merit. Also, those who are suitable for giving, just as I have dedicated to the kings and princes, they have nothing that they do not give to sentient beings, thinking in this way, it is permissible to give, which is distinguished by the difference between the thoughts of permission and prohibition. Like this, if it is not because of understanding the necessity, but because one's own mind is overwhelmed by stinginess, then relying on the words of the Dharma will become deceiving others with lies. To this, the forceful person requests: "I am still weak in ability, and my roots of virtue have not yet matured. I am a beginner in the Mahayana, controlled by the mind of unwillingness to give, and I am in a state of clinging and attachment to self and others. Please, noble one, forgive me and do not be sad. I will do my best to fulfill the wishes of you and all sentient beings." Say this to the beggar.
