For a bodhisattva who is a beginner, one should first encourage them to recite. After hearing extensively, one should encourage them to dwell in solitude. Having completely dwelt in solitude, one should encourage them to become a virtuous friend. Having become a virtuous friend, one should encourage them to be happy and at ease. Having become happy and at ease, one should encourage them to know the time. Having known the time, one should encourage them to be fearless. Having become fearless, one should encourage them to understand the meaning. Having understood the meaning, one should encourage them to follow the Dharma. Having followed the Dharma, one should encourage them to be without delusion. Having become without delusion, one should encourage them to be completely joyful. Thus it is said. Therefore, the afflictions of one's own mind-stream should be eliminated by diligently engaging in listening, contemplation, and meditation on the instructions of virtuous friends, the scriptures of the Sugatas, and the treatises explained by noble and wise beings. One should have love and compassion for sentient beings, and with faith in the teachings of the Tathagatas, one should diligently read the Mahayana scriptures, thereby transforming into great benefit for others. Whoever reads, remembers, or recites this sutra, or writes it or encourages others to write it, the ripening result of that is inconceivable. Thus it is said, generally speaking, and in particular, the story of the scholar friend Dbyig gnyen reciting sutras, and the descendants of pigeons hearing it, thereby reducing their karma, and after their lifespan ended, being reborn as the disciple Dbus pa, the scholar friend Blo gros brtan pa. Furthermore, there is a story that when one dwells in the supreme state of love and compassion and recites scriptures, even the gods from the sky listen. Similarly, in the places where those who possessed the mind of enlightenment in the past resided, the mind-streams of the local deities and others became gentle, and therefore that place is complete with auspicious qualities. Even if they did not directly teach the Dharma, merely reciting the profound words and meanings of the Dharma, or even just the act of sprinkling water, has the giving of Dharma, and therefore makes their mind-streams gentle and joyful. Therefore, in order to eliminate the karma and afflictions of all sentient beings, one should recite profound scriptures with the mind of enlightenment and give the gift of Dharma.

One should focus on giving, actually giving pens, ink, scriptures, etc., and teaching worldly skills such as craftsmanship that are faultless and beneficial to the Dharma and sentient beings. Even telling stories, speaking words that inspire faith in the Dharma, and slightly discussing the laws of good and evil and karma can be of great benefit to others in this degenerate age of the Dharma. Therefore, liberating oneself and benefiting others with the Dharma is the main form of giving, because material things can only temporarily relieve suffering. Therefore, one should teach the common collections of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Vidyadharas according to the capacity of the disciples, which is the intermediate level of giving. This includes the discipline of guarding mindfulness, the patience of believing in the Dharma of omniscience and enduring the scolding of others, the diligence of desiring progress, the samadhi of dedicating the virtue of a mind unmixed with the lesser vehicle to perfect enlightenment, and the wisdom of knowing the nature of reality to be emptiness, which are the six perfections explained in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses. For those of superior intellect, one should establish them in the Dharma that is as inconceivable as the sky, which is clearly shown by the very scripture just quoted. Furthermore, a householder Bodhisattva mainly engages in material and fearlessness giving, while an ordained person should engage in Dharma giving, as stated in the Bodhisattva Pratimoksha Sutra: Shariputra, if a householder Bodhisattva fills Buddha lands as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven precious substances and offers them to the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, Shariputra, if an ordained Bodhisattva teaches a four-line verse, the latter accumulates far more merit than the former. Shariputra, the Tathagata does not allow the ordained to engage in material giving. The meaning of this is that material giving is mostly related to householders and is easy to obtain, therefore the ordained should guard their discipline.
